Freshman Lauren Gilbert scored a game-high 27 points and Washington & Jefferson cruised to an 82-48 victory over Hiram in the first round of the Springhill Suites Tip-Off Tournament Friday night at Henry Memorial Center.

W&J (1-0) will play Mount Union in today’s championship game at 4 p.m.

The Presidents had little trouble with winless Hiram (0-3), using an 11-0 run that started late in the first half and extended into the second half to open a 20-point lead.

Gilbert, a Baldwin graduate, made 10 13 shots in her initial collegiate game and the Presidents shot 48 percent. Hiram shot only 32 percent from the field and made just one of 18 three-pointers. The Terriers were held to only 16 points over the middle two quarters.

Gilbert was the only W&J player to score in double figures. Amirah Moore followed with nine points.

Allison Vannoy paced Hiram with 14 points.

Hiram will play Dickinson in the tournament’s consolation game.
