Monessen boys snap drought against Seton-La Salle

MONESSEN – Two second-half goals lifted the Monessen boys soccer team to an upset victory over Seton-La Salle, 2-1, Tuesday afternoon in a Section 4-A match.
It was the Greyhounds’ (9-4, 7-4) first victory over the previously unbeaten Rebels (11-1-1, 9-1-1) after at least eight consecutive losses dating back to 2003.
Senior Cory Fleming scored the game-winning goal with 12 minutes remaining in the game. Sophomore Cameron Frolo scored Monessen’s first goal to tie the game at 1-1.
The Greyhounds have won seven of their last eight games.
Senior Darryl Daniels scored Seton-La Salle’s goal.
Since 2003 when the Rebels defeated Monessen, 10-0, in a WPIAL playoff match, Seton-La Salle had defeated the Greyhounds eight consecutive times – six by shutout. The margin of victory in those games was a little more than six goals.
The Rebels defeated Monessen, 5-0, earlier this season.
”That’s probably one of the biggest wins in the program’s history,” said Sam Perry, in his 13th season as Greyhounds’ coach. “To beat a program like that is amazing.”
Perry said he informed the team five minutes before the start of the game it would employ a “4-1, 4-1” defensive alignment, in an attempt to slow the Rebels’ offense.
He credited senior Isiah Allums with doing an outstanding job shadowing Daniels.
”We played it to a ‘T,'” Perry said. “The boys held to (the defense). It worked perfectly.
”Nobody expected us to win. The defense gave us a chance to keep it close. That’s all we could hope for. But the boys bought in. It’s a great win.”
