Cooper, Canon-McMillan hold off pesky Shaler

CANONSBURG – Davey Cooper capped a three-minute drive with a two-yard touchdown plunge – his second TD of the game and the first while on offense – as Canon-McMillan rallied in the fourth quarter to beat winless Shaler 28-21 Friday night in a nonconference game.
Shaler (0-7) led 14-7 at halftime. Canon-McMillan (3-3) took a 21-14 lead when Greg Piechnick caught an eight-yard TD pass from Jon Quinque with 6:49 remaining.
It took Shaler less than a minute to tie the score on a one-yard run by quarterback Darin Mizgorski, who also threw a 33-yard TD pass to Brian Colarusso late in the first half.
C-M then drove for the game-winning touchdown. Cooper had earlier tied the score at 14-14 when he recovered a Shaler fumble and returned it two yards for a touchdown.
The Big Macs’ first score came when Piechnick caught a teammate’s fumble out of the air and ran five yards with it to give C-M a 7-0 lead.
Elijah Turner rushed for 125 yards on 26 carries for Canon-McMillan, which had three turnovers.
