6 local golfers qualify for PIAA Regional

SEWICKLEY – Waynesburg’s Aaron Yorio shot a 6-over 76 to finish tied for third place in the WPIAL Class 2A Golf Championships Thursday at Allegheny Country Club.
Yorio led a group of six local golfers to advance to the PIAA Western Regional, which will be held at Tom’s Run Golf Course in Blairsville Oct. 16.
The next area finisher was Carmichaels’ Matt Barrish, who tied for seventh after carding an 8-over 78.
Trent Belleville and Hunter Donahue, both of McGuffey, qualified with an 81 and 82, respectively. The Highlanders are only one of three teams – Sewickley Academy and South Park are the others – to advance more than one golfer to the regional round.
Bentworth’s Christian Sadler finished in a tie for ninth place with a 9-over 79, and Burgettstown’s Clark Miller shot a 12-over 82.
Eighteen holes weren’t enough to determine a champion.
Tied at 74, Sewickley Academy’s Cole Luther and Riverside’s Skyler Fox returned to the No. 1 tee for a playoff hole. Fox, a sophomore, outlasted Luther with a par to win his second straight WPIAL championship. He was one of only two sophomores to finish in the top 10.
McGuffey’s David Chapman, California’s Jacob Cannon and Chartiers-Houston’s Spencer Kane each tied with a 14-over 84 to barely miss the cut.
