Second half interceptions doom Waynesburg in loss to Grove City
WAYNESBURG – The Grove City defense regrouped at halftime as the Wolverines snapped an eight-game losing streak and defeated Waynesburg 21-14 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at John F. Wiley Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The back-and-forth game, which served as Waynesburg’s homecoming, was decided when Grove City quarterback Randall Labrie scored the game-winning, one-yard touchdown run with 2:26 left in the third quarter to take a 21-14 lead.
That’s all the Wolverines defense needed despite giving up 14 second-quarter points to Waynesburg, including a three-yard touchdown reception by Chad Walker to even the score at 14-14 at halftime.
After Grove City (2-3, 2-1) forced the Yellow Jackets to punt and turn the ball over on downs with their first two possessions in the second half, the Wolverines then intercepted Waynesburg sophomore quarterback Tyler Perone on three straight possessions.
Waynesburg (0-3, 0-5) failed to cross midfield in the final quarter.
Labrie, who also had a touchdown throwing, primarily made a living of turning around to hand it off to running back Wesley Schools. Schools had 163 yards on 33 carries and a touchdown.
Perone, who completed 16 of 34 passes for 173 yards, had two touchdowns to accompany his three-interception day.
