Avella gets 1st win; Cal, South Fayette remain unbeaten

Owen English ran for two scores and caught a 32-yard go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter as Avella won its first game of the season, 18-16, over host Monessen Friday night in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.

It is the second year in a row that Avella (1-6, 1-8) has defeated Monessen.

Monessen held a pair of leads, including 16-12 after a 66-yard touchdown run by Elijah Davis with 1:36 left in the third quarter.

Avella, however, rallied for the game-winner on the Taylor-to-English pass with 4:39 remaining.

English scored on runs of one and six yards, the latter giving Avella a 12-8 lead late in the first half.

Lyndon Henderson opened the scoring by catching a 38-yard TD pass from Dawayne Howell.

The loss dropped Monessen to 1-5 in the conference and 2-7 overall. The Greyhounds can still make the playoffs with a win over Mapletown next week and a Fort Cherry victory over Jefferson-Morgan.

California 57, Jefferson-Morgan 8

Jonathan Wood had 11 carries for 149 yards and 5 TDs in California’s 57-8 romp over Jefferson-Morgan in a Tri-County South Conference game.

Zion Aldrich had 8 carries for 136 yards and a TD and Cochise Ryan ran six times for 124 yards and a score for the Trojans (6-0, 9-0).

Zack Gamble caught a 65-yard pass from Jacob Broadwater for the Rockets (2-4, 3-6).

South Fayette 49, Highlands 14

Drew Saxton completed 17 of 27 passes for 185 yards and four touchdowns as undefeated South Fayette rolled to a 49-14 victory over visiting Highlands, giving the Lions at least a share of the Class 4A Northwest Nine Conference title.

South Fayette (7-0, 9-0) led 27-0 in the first quarter and 42-7 at halftime. The Lions can win the conference title outright next week by defeating Montour.

Saxton threw TD passes of 10 yards to Johnny Beck, and 31 and 21 yards to Mike Trimbur in the first quarter. He threw his fourth TD pass early in the second quarter, a nine-yarder to Nolan Lutz that made the score 32-7.

Trimbur caught five passes for 106 yards.

Beck rushed for 102 yards on nine carries and had TD runs of 38 and five yards, the latter in the final minute of the first half.

Andrew Franklin had a six-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Derry 47, Waynesburg 0

Shawn Broadway rushed for 190 yards and four touchdowns as Derry improved its playoff chances with a 47-0 victory over host Waynesburg in the Class AAA Interstate Conference.

The game was the first for Waynesburg since Russ Moore resigned last Saturday as the Raiders’ head coach.

Broadway, who carried only 10 times, scored on runs of 59, 36 and 65 yards as Derry (5-1, 8-1) had 376 rushing yards. Colton Nemchek had TD runs of 25 and seven yards as the Trojans won their seventh in a row.

Waynesburg (1-6, 1-7) was held to 174 total yards. Dylan Scritchfield rushed for 54 yards on 13 carries, and he completed 14 of 22 passes for 94 yards.

Belle Vernon 35, West Mifflin 7

Logan Pfronger returned a punt for a touchdown, his second score of the game, to help Belle Vernon to a 35-7 win over West Mifflin in a Big 9 Conference game.

Mason Pascoe ran for 47 yards and two TDs for Belle Vernon (8-0, 8-0). Jared Hartman added a 1-yard scoring run.

Lofton had 2 catches for 79 yards and a touchdown for West Mifflin (4-3, 5-3).

McGuffey 68, Chartiers-Houston 6

Christian Clutter scored three touchdowns to help McGuffey rout Chartiers-Houston, 68-6, in a nonconference game in Claysville.

Clutter returned a punt 15 yards, and broke off runs of 15 and 80 yards for the Highlanders (6-3). Connor Romestan and Adam Townsend each scored twice.

Tyler Bard caught a 10-yard TD pass from Matt Whitfield for the only score for the Bucs (0-9). Whitfield threw for 74 and rushed for 44 yards.

Matt Mounts was 3-for-4 for 58 yards and a TD. Clutter rushed for 104 yards on 4 carries and Townsend 64 on 5. Romestan had 41 on 7 tries.

Jeannette 47, Mapletown 0

Robert Kennedy threw two touchdown passes and returned an interception 42 yards for a score as undefeated Jeannette, the top-ranked team in Class A, rolled to a 47-0 nonconference victory over Mapletown.

Jeannette (9-0) led 27-0 after one quarter and 40-0 at halftime. The Jayhawks held Mapletown (2-7) to two first downs. The Maples again played for the second consecutive week without running back Dylan Rush, who was second in the WPIAL in rushing entering the weekend.

New Castle 20, Ringgold 14

Josh Thomason had 18 carries for 115 and a touchdown as New Castle stopped Ringgold, 20-14, in a nonconference game.

New Castle (6-3) led 6-0 at halftime and 20-7 after the third quarter as Devin Sams caught a TD pass and Marcus Hooker ran one in from 10 yards out.

Ringgold (3-5) caught it to a 6-point lead when Brennen Small scored.

Frazier 39, Bentworth 18

J.D. Celaschi returned a fourth quarter interception 100 yards with 5:00 to go to seal Frazier’s 39-18 victory over Bentworth in a Century Conference game.

Celaschi opened the scoring with a 32-yard run and Mason Kelly scored twice for the Commodores (2-4, 2-7).

Spencer Fereza ran for 91 yards and a touchdown and Riordan Tush returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown for Bentworth (2-5, 3-6).
