Quarterback Colin Phillips ran for three touchdowns as Tri-County South Conference champion California defeated visiting West Greene 42-0.

California (7-0, 10-0) finished off its first undefeated regular season since 1949 and made a strong statement for the top seed in next week’s Class A playoffs.

The Trojans took advantage of two West Greene fumbles in the first quarter to forge a 14-0 lead. Phillips scored from 14 yards and Cochise Ryan from eight yards.

Phillips scored again on a six-yard keeper and Zion Aldrich went in from five yards to make it 28-0 at halftime.

Phillips scored his third touchdown on an 11-yard run in the third quarter and Jelani Stafford capped the scoring with a five-yard run. Stafford led the Cal triple-option attack with 137 rushing yards on 74 carries and Phillips followed with 134 on 14 attempts.

Monessen 30, Mapletown 6

Dawayne Howell tossed two touchdown passes to help Monessen defeat Mapletown, 30-6, in a Tri-County South Conference game.

Mapletown running back Dylan Rush did not play because of a noncontact injury sustained three weeks ago. Rush led the WPIAL in rushing at the time. After the injury, Mapletown did not score an offensive touchdown. Chuck Lash returned a kickoff 85 yards for the lone score for Mapletown (1-6, 2-8)

Howell hit Thaddeus King from 19 yards and Isaiah Beltram from 27 for Monessen (2-5,, 3-7), which earned a spot in the playoffs as a fifth-place team. Howell was 10 of 15 for 159 yards. Dishon Howell returned an interception for a score.

Frazier 42, Chartiers-Houston 6

Mason Kelly and George Smarlich each rushed for three first-half touchdowns as Frazier cruised to a 42-6 victory over host Chartiers-Houston in the century Conference.

Frazier (3-5, 3-7) overcame an 0-6 start to make the playoffs. The Commodores led 28-0 after one quarter, getting TD runs of 31, 35 and 13 yards from Kelly, who finished with 129 yards on four carries.

Smarlich had a TD run of seven yards in the first quarter and runs of 20 and five in the second quarter.

Chartiers-Houston (0-7, 0-10) scored one a one-yard plunge by Matt Whitfield in the second quarter.

South Side Beaver 55, Waynesburg 21

Jake Botkin, Jordan Bruce and Derek Francheck combined for 374 rushing yards and five touchdowns as South Side Beaver defeated visiting Waynesburg 55-21 in a nonconference game.

All three rushers for South Side (3-7) topped 100 yards in the game, led by Botkin with 148 on 13 carries. He scored on a 55-yard run in the fourth quarter. Bruce had 119 yards on 14 carries and scored from three and 10 yards. Franchek had TD runs of two and 29 yards and finished with 107 on nine attempts.

The Rams led 27-14 at halftime. Waynesburg (1-8) scored first, getting a 36-yard touchdown from Nate Stephenson, who rushed for 110 yards on 14 carries. Stephenson had an 11-yard TD run in the second quarter and Wyatt Henson returned a kickoff 85 yards for the Raiders’ only score of the second half.

SSB quarterback Trenton Seik threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score.

Fort Cherry 48, Jefferson-Morgan 21

Fort Cherry scored one minute into the game and went on to defeat Jefferson-Morgan 48-21 in a Tri-County South Conference contest at Parker Field.

The loss, combined with Monessen’s win over Mapletown, eliminated Jefferson-Morgan (2-5, 3-7) from playoff contention. Fort Cherry (5-2, 7-2) is bound for the playoffs as the conference’s third-place team.

Zach Vincenti scored two rushing touchdowns and caught a scoring pass for FC and Ryhan Culberson threw for three scores and ran for two more. Culberson opened the scoring by connecting with Nick Candelore on an 85-yard TD in the first quarter.

J-M’s Colton Davidson rushed for a four-yard score, caught a nine-yard scoring pass and returned the second-half kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown.

EF 35, Burgettstown 14

Elizabeth Forward scored the final three touchdowns to break a 14-14 tie to come away with a 35-14 victory in a nonconference game.

Brian Malloy scored his second TD, a 1-yard run in the third quarter, to make it 21-14. EF (7-2) scored twice in the fourth quarter.

Jared John and Jacob Schrockman scored for Burgettstown (6-3). Shane Kemper ran for 80 yards.

Butler 28, Canon-McMillan 26

Luke Michalek returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and scored two others as Butler upended Canon-McMillan, 28-26, in a nonconference game.

Michalek returned the opening kickoff 93 yards and matched that after C-M’s first score. Michalek finished with 249 rushing yards on 31 carries.

Michalek also scored on runs of 13 and 82 yards.

Drew Engel caught two TD passes and Greydon Piechnick had another for the Big Macs (4-6).

C-M got within two points after a 2-yard run by Davey Cooper. The Big Macs went for two but QB Jonathan Quinque was stopped short of the end zone.

Cooper had 129 yards on 20 carries, Quinque passed for 278 on 14 of 23 and Engel caught 9 passes for 165 yards. C-M had 436 total yards,

Summit Academy 44, Avella 20

Delano Brown threw four touchdown passes to send Summit Academy to a 44-20 victory over Avella in a nonconference game.

Brown also scored on a 13-yard run for Summit Academy (4-5).

Brandon Snyder, Cameron Lawrence and Dylan Markle scored for the Eagles (1-9). Avella’s Owen English ran for 64 yards.

In other games

Big Nine Conference champion Belle Vernon finished the regular season undefeated by shutting out Ambridge 42-0. Playoff-bound Chaleroi rolled to a 48-7 win at Brownsville and Peters Township prepared for the Class 6-A playoffs with a 45-14 win over Shaler. No game details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
