WAYNESBURG – JuWuan Jones returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown, Austin Wilson had two short scoring runs and Waynesburg’s defense surrendered only eight first downs as the Yellow Jackets rolled to a 34-7 victory over Thiel in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday at John F. Wiley Stadium.

The win was the first of the season for Waynesburg (1-5, 1-7) and first for Yellow Jackets interim head coach Chris Smithley.

It also snapped an 11-game losing streak for Waynesburg.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the game with their running game, churning out 284 yards on 65 attempts. Waynesburg threw only five passes that netted just three yards.

The game featured only six completed passes, four by Thiel (1-5, 1-7).

Chad Walker led the Waynesburg ground game with 104 yards on 16 carries. He scored on a three-yard run with 18 seconds left the first half to give the Yellow Jackets a 27-7 lead.

Jones began the scoring with his long punt return barely two minutes into the game. Thiel tied the score at 7-7 on a 72-yard pass from Ronald Brown to Marcus Waddy, but Wilson scored his first TD, on a six-yard run, to give Waynesburg a 14-7 lead midway through the opening quarter.

A one-yard run by quarterback Jake Dougherty gave the Yellow Jackets a two-touchdown advantage and Walker’s score made it a 20-point lead.

Wilson added a two-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

Thiel was held to 153 total yards, almost half of that being generated on the Tomcats’ touchdown play.
