Wild Things re-sign pitcher Eaton

The Washington Wild Things announced Tuesday they have re-signed lefty relief pitcher Jake Eaton for the 2018 Frontier League season.

Eaton was acquired in late July in a trade with the Salina Stockade of the American Association. With Washington, the LaPorte, Ind., native made 12 appearances spanning 20.1 innings and had a 1-0 record, on save and a 2.21 ERA. He struck out 23 and issued only seven walks.

“Jake was one of the best finds for us during the 2017 season. Being on the travel team in the American Association took a toll on him physically,” said Wild Things general manager Steven Zavacky. “We were happy to see how he embraced his role in Washington and how he responded to the pressure of a playoff race. Jake will be a vital piece of our success in 2018.”

Eaton will be trying to build off a successful start to his Wild Things career.

“I hope to just continue improving as a pitcher and contributing to the success of the team,” Eaton said. “Last year, I was comfortable in my role out of the bullpen. … We’ve talked about the possibility of starting, but during spring training I’ll be willing to try out any role.”

W&J women edged in PAC soccer semis

Freshman Michaela Burke scored a goal in the 86th minute to break a tie and send Grove City to a 2-1 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference tournament semifinals Tuesday afternoon.

The win was the 10th straight for Grove City (15-4), which advances to the finals against top-seeded Thomas More.

W&J (12-6-1), the No. 3 seed, tied the score at 1-1 on an unassisted goal by Ashton Grimm in the 40th minute. The Presidents had opportunities to take the lead but Grove City goalkeeper Trishae Winters made a season-high 10 saves. W&J had 21 shots to Grove City’s 13.

In the NBA

Devin Booker scored 32 points, Mike James added 24 and the Phoenix Suns rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Brooklyn Nets 122-114 Tuesday night.

T.J. Warren scored 14 of his 20 points during the final period for the Suns, who squandered an 18-point lead in the third quarter when Brooklyn went on a 17-0 run. Phoenix seemed out of it after Ronda Hollis-Jefferson’s basket gave Brooklyn a 106-98 lead with 6:35 left in the fourth.

• A strong first-half allowed the Indiana Pacers starters to rest for most of the second half.

Bojan Bogdanovic scored 17 points to lead a balanced Indiana offense and help the Pacers to a 101-83 rout of the Sacramento Kings.

The Pacers (4-3) scored the first nine points and built a 55-30 lead at the half.

• Utah Jazz forward Joe Johnson will miss at least two weeks with a right wrist injury.

The 17-year veteran had an MRI Tuesday that found tendon instability in his right wrist. He suffered the injury during a 104-89 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Monday and will be reevaluated in two weeks.

Browns botch trade

Clock management hurt the Cleveland Browns again.

And this time, it cost them a quarterback.

Failing to get the necessary paperwork to the NFL offices by Wednesday’s 4 p.m. trade deadline, Cleveland’s proposed deal to get Cincinnati quarterback AJ McCarron fell apart in the final minutes, the latest misstep for a team unable to solve its quarterback riddle.

The teams had an agreement in place, sending McCarron to Cleveland for draft picks, but the required documentation – paperwork signed by both clubs – arrived in New York too late, said league spokesman Brian McCarthy. He did not provide any further detail about why the transaction wasn’t finalized.
