NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Bernard Johnson ran for 125 yards and one touchdown as Muskingum spoiled the debut of Waynesburg interim head coach Chris Smithley by shutting out the Yellow Jackets 19-0 in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon.

Waynesburg was held to only 10 first downs and 114 total yards. The Yellow Jackets mustered little offense on the ground as they were held to 18 rushing yards and an average of 0.5 yards per attempt.

Still, Waynesburg was locked in a scoreless tie until Muskingum quarterback Brody Hahn ran two yards for a touchdown with four seconds left in the first half.

Waynesburg had its best drive of the game result in a missed 32-yard field goal in the second quarter, after Muskingum had two drives end in turnovers inside the Yellow Jackets’ 25-yard line.

Muskingum took the second-half kickoff and drove for a 28-yard field goal by Austin Alice. Another Alice field goal, this one from 27 yards, gave Muskingum a 13-0 lead late in the third quarter.

Johnson sealed the win with a 67-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.

Waynesburg quarterback Tyler Perone completed only 11 of 36 passes for 95 yards and was intercepted twice. Austin Wilson was the Yellow Jackets’ leading rusher with 28 yards on 10 carries. After falling behind, Waynesburg’s offense could not generate enough offense to fuel a comeback as it was held to minus-5 yards in the third quarter and committed one turnover.
