TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Hector Roa hit a two-run double that gave Washington the lead and sparked the Wild Things’ seven-run top of the ninth inning Sunday as they rallied for a 9-3 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums.

Washington’s win clinches the first wild-card berth and No. 3 seed for the Frontier League playoffs. The Wild Things will begin the postseason Tuesday night (7:05 p.m.) at home against the West Division champion Florence Freedom in Game 1 of a best-of-5 semifinal series. Washington will host Game 2 Wednesday night.

East champion and top-seeded Schaumburg will play wild-card Evansville in the other playoff series.

Washington trailed the regular-season finale 3-2 after the Beach Bums’ Steven Patterson hit a solo home run off Davis Adkins (5-1) in the bottom of the eighth.

The Wild Things (53-43), who have won seven of their last eight games, loaded the bases with one out in the ninth before Roa hit a two-run double that gave Washington the lead at 4-3. After a sacrifice fly by John Fidanza, Justin Bohn had a run-scoring single that made it 6-3. Bohn was 3-for-3.

Trevin Sonnier and James Harris each drew bases-loaded walks and an error allowed another run to score, giving Washington a 9-3 lead.

Pitcher Frank Trimarco made his first start for the Wild Things and allowed one run over five innings.

Washington had 13 hits but stranded 12 baserunners.
