AVELLA – Mapletown’s Dylan Rush and Avella’s Owen English, a pair of senior running backs, put on quite a show in a Tri-County South Conference game Friday night.

Rush ran for 524 yards on 39 carries and scored seven touchdowns to lead Mapletown to a 48-32 victory. The 524 yards is believed to be the WPIAL single-game rushing record. The previous record was 492 yards, set by Armstrong’s Zane Dudek last year. It is the third consecutive year that the WPIAL single-game rushing record has been broken.

The local single-game rushing record was 424 yards by Mike Vernillo of Fort Cherry in a 1997 contest.

The state record is 722 yards by Journey Brown of Meadville in a 2015 game. Rush’s 524 yards is believed to be the second-best single-game total in state history.

Rush now has 5,354 career rushing yards. In four career games against Avella, Rush has gained 1,364 yards with 22 touchdowns and scored 149 points.

Rush scored on runs of 10, 55, 70, 72, 42, 64 and 11 yards, helping Mapletown even its record at 1-1 in the conference and 2-2 overall. Avella is 0-3, 0-4.

Rush has 1,056 rushing yards this season.

English didn’t have a bad night either, rushing for 202 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries as Avella stayed within striking distance until Rush’s final touchdown with 2:35 remaining. English had touchdown runs of 11, 54, one and 48 yards.

The teams combined for 749 rushing yards.
