SF wins 52nd straight in regular season

SAXONBURG – Johnny Beck scored three first-quarter touchdowns – one on a 64-yard fumble return – and Drew Saxton threw three TD passes as undefeated South Fayette rolled to a 52-14 victory over Knoch in a Northwest Nine Conference game Friday night.
The victory was the 52nd consecutive regular-season win for South Fayette (3-0, 5-0). The streak ties Braddock (1953-60) for the second-longest in WPIAL history.
The Lions had no trouble with Knoch (1-2, 1-3), which lost its third in a row. South Fayette led 29-7 after one quarter and 45-7 at halftime.
Beck rushed for 105 yards on only nine carries and did most of his damage in the first quarter. He opened the scoring when he scooped up a Knoch fumble and returned it for a touchdown less than two minutes into the game.
Before the quarter would end, Beck would ramble 65 yards on a running play for his second touchdown and add a five-yard scoring scamper to make it 22-0.
Saxton threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Mike Trimbur to make it 29-0.
Knock ran the enusing kickoff back for a score, but South Fayette answered with a 32-yard field goal by Brian Coe and tacked on two more touchdowns before halftime.
Saxton and tight end Noah Plack hooked up on scoring passes of 14 and four yards, the latter with 22 seconds left in the half to make it 45-7. Saxton completed 12 of 19 passes for 270 yards. Plack was on the receiving end of five Saxton passes netting 81 yards.
The teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a four-yard plunge by the Lions’ John Obenour with 55 seconds left in the game.
South Fayette remains a half-game ahead of Mars (3-1, 4-1) in the Northwest Nine standings. The Lions already have defeated the Planets. South Fayette will try to extend its regular-season winning, which dates back to 2011, next week when it hosts Blackhawk in a conference game.
