High school baseball: Mikes knock Fort Cherry from unbeaten list
The top five hitters in the Carmichaels’ lineup had eight hits as the Mikes Class 2A Section 1 foe Fort Cherry from the ranks of the unbeaten, 10-4.
After quickly giving up its four-run lead in the third inning, Carmichaels scored a run in the fifth and five runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Rangers.
Matthew Barrish went 3-for-4 and scored twice for the Mikes. Nick Mundell went 2-for-4 with two RBI and earned the win on the mound. Al Cree also had a pair of hits for Carmichaels (2-1, 2-2).
Shane Smith had an RBI double for Fort Cherry (3-1, 3-1), which committed six errors.
Frazier 7, Bentworth 6: Frazier scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead and defeat Class 2 Section 1 opponent Bentworth, 7-6.
Down to their last at-bat trailing by four runs, 5-1, the Commodores took advantage of three Bentworth errors in the final inning before a Mason Kelly two-run double gave them the lead.
Frazier (1-1, 2-2) then held off a rally from the Bearcats in the bottom half of the seventh inning to secure the victory.
Bentworth (0-3, 1-4) only had five hits and took advantage of early sloppiness from the Commodores, who committed five errors in the game.
South Fayette 10, Ambridge 0: Matt Primm dominated on the mound and South Fayette racked up 10 hits to defeat Ambridge in five innings, 10-0, in a Class 4A Section 2 contest.
Primm only surrendered four hits and struck out six in his five innings to earn the victory.
Mitch Dunay led South Fayette (3-1, 5-3) at the plate with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
Richie Dell and Primm also had a multi-hit game for the Lions, each with two hits.
Ambridge is 0-4.
Montour 11, Trinity 5: Cam Pies went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple to lead Montour past Trinity, 11-5, for its first win in Class 5A Section 2.
Taking a tied game, 2-2, into the fourth inning, the Spartans scored four runs to take the lead for good.
Logan Vietmeier hit a home run for Montour (1-1, 1-1).
The Hillers were led by junior Jared Watson, who went 2-for-4 and hit his second home run of the season.
Brandon Robaugh had a double for Trinity (1-3, 1-4).
California 13, Burgettstown 5: Richie Stimmell had a triple and three RBI as California defeated Burgettstown, 13-5, in a Class 2A Section 1 contest.
The Trojans used two innings to do most of their damage, scoring a total of 11 runs in the fourth and fifth.
Brandon Powell earned the win for California (2-2, 2-3).
Jacob Swartz, Payton Conte and Jacob Piktel each had two singles for the Trojans.
Burgettstown (1-2, 2-2) was paced by Ryan Lounder, Dante Gianfrancesco and Hunter Ayers who each had a pair of hits. Lounder had three RBI.
Belle Vernon 13, Keystone Oaks 12: In a back-and-forth slugfest, Belle Vernon scored five runs in the fifth inning and held on to defeat Keystone Oaks, 13-12, in a Class 4A Section 3 game.
Keystone Oaks added a run in the top of the seventh inning but couldn’t score the tying run despite getting runners into scoring position.
Mason Brooks led the Golden Eagles with four hits. Four separate players for Keystone Oaks (1-3, 2-3) had a multi-hit game.
Jake Rathway and Garrett Greco each had three hits for Belle Vernon (3-0, 3-0).
