High school baseball roundup: Belle Vernon’s Naylor throws no-hitter

South Park couldn’t find an answer for Belle Vernon starting pitcher Cole Naylor.

Naylor threw a no-hitter Saturday to defeat South Park, 2-0, in a Class 4A Section 3 game.

It was an efficient performance for Naylor, working ahead in the count on 19 of the 23 batters he faced. He finished with eight strikeouts.

Belle Vernon (4-1, 4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Joe Sabolek through the middle of the infield. The Leopards extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on a double from Josh Hoffman that scored Jake Rathway.

A mainstay near the top of the section in years past, South Park (1-3, 6-4) has lost three of its last four games.

Jarrod West pitched a complete game and went 2-for-4 to lead Washington to its first win of the season, 7-2, against Section 3-AAA opponent Southmoreland.

West, a freshman, surrendered two hits and struck out four. His single in the first inning also resulted in the opening two runs of the game for the Prexies (1-3, 1-6). Washington scored in four of the first five innings.

Southmoreland is 0-4, 0-6.

Carmichaels scored six runs in the fourth inning on its way to a 10-3 victory over Bentworth in a Section 1-AA game. It was the fourth win of the week for the Mikes.

Each of the six runs scored by the Mikes in the fourth inning came with two outs, the final two coming on a two-run double by Dylan Wilson, giving Carmichaels an 8-3 lead.

Gavin Pratt, Al Cree, Nick Mundell and Wilson each had a multi-hit games for Carmichaels (4-1, 5-2). Steven Spehar was the winning pitcher, scattering eight Bentworth (0-5, 1-6) hits. He struck out eight.

Losing pitcher Jacob Maimone went 2-for-4 with a double.

Peters Township starting pitcher Garrett Miller threw a three-hit shutout as the Indians defeated Class 6A Section 3 foe Baldwin, 8-0.

Miller only needed 85 pitches (64 strikes) for the complete game. He finished with eight strikeouts.

The Indians (2-2, 5-5) had six players with multi-hit games. Colin Caven went 2-for-3 with a double. Tom Colcombe hit a three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning to make it 6-0.
