Tri-CADA to honor scholar athletes

Each year, the Tri-County Athletic Directors’ Association honors student-athletes by providing scholarships. These athletes have excelled in the classroom and on the field.

This year, four boys and four girls will be honored at the Coach of the Year Banquet, which will be held at 5 p.m., Sunday at the DoubleTree by Hilton in the Meadow Lands.

Tickets for the banquet are $35 each and are on sale at Washington High School, 201 Allison Ave., Washington, PA, 15301. Reservations can be made by calling athletic director Mike Bosnic at 724-223-5085, ext. 2091. All proceeds from the banquet benefit Special Olympics.

The following is a brief bio on the scholar-athletes.

Dylan Rush, Mapletown: Rush earned seven letters, four in football and three in baseball. He is a member of Quarterbacks of Life, Future is Mine Club, National Honor Society and SADD. He has a 4.33 grade-point average and will attend California University.

Adam Simon, Albert Gallatin: Simon earned 12 letters in varsity sports: four in baseball, three in wrestling and soccer and two in football. He belongs to the Youth Astronomy Club, the 4.0 Club, Interact, National Honor Society and Student Council. He has not chosen a college yet but carries a 4.2 grade-point average.

Cory Fleming, Monessen: Fleming had an impressive 15 letters won from playing four years of football, soccer and baseball and three in basketball. He is president of the senior class, president of the National Honor Society, vice president of the Spanish National Honor Society, a member of the Spanish Club and was on the newspaper staff as a junior.

Luke Mary, Peters Township: Mary earned four letters in wrestling, three in baseball and one in football. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Rowdy Red Club. He has not chosen a college yet but carries a 4.8 grade-point average.

Kinlee Whited, Beth Center: Whited earned 10 varsity letters. Four came from basketball and three each came from volleyball and track. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Peer Jury, Teen Outreach, Youth Traffic Safety and is Student Council President. She will take a 3.90 grade-point average to Pitt-Johnstown.

Julia Vulcano, Chartiers-Houston: Vulcano earned 11 varsity letters – four each in basketball and cheer, two in track and one in volleyball. Her affiliations are with the Leo Club, Students and Exceptional Children, Peer Jury, Future Business Leaders of America, and the Chartiers-Houston Zoo. She will take a 4.25 GPA to Penn State’s main campus in the fall.

Mikalah Maxwell, McGuffey: Maxwell played four seasons in soccer and also played basketball and ran track. She belongs to the National Honor Society, McGuffey Spanish Club, Teen Action and McFriends. She will take a 4.2 grade-point average to American University.

Jenna Vito, Bentworth: Vito earned four letters in volleyball and basketball and one in track. Her activities included the National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Girl Scouts, Year Book Club, Senior Council and Junior Council. She has a 4.195 grade-point average and will attend West Virginia University.
