Cal picked second

in PSAC West

The California University football team was picked to finish second in the preseason Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West poll for the second-straight year Friday afternoon.

The Vulcans sit second in the preseason poll after finishing with a 9-3 overall record, including a 5-2 mark in divisional play. Under third-year head coach Gary Dunn, Cal returns 10 starters from last year’s team that earned a berth to the NCAA Playoffs for a consecutive season.

The 2018 regular-season schedule features six road games, including three straight to start the year, and five home games. The league-mandated crossover opponents include the top-three teams from the Eastern Division last year that combined for a 27-9 record.

IUP was the preseason favorite for the third-straight year with seven first-place votes after winning the league title and advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Playoffs.

Cal received the remaining first-place vote, while Slippery Rock and Edinboro rounded out the top half of the poll. Gannon and Mercyhurst were slotted fifth and sixth, respectively, while Clarion and Seton Hill completed the poll.

In the PSAC East, West Chester was the preseason favorite with six first-place votes after playing in the PSAC Championship last year. Shippensburg, which tied for first place in the divisional standings in 2017, placed second and Kutztown sits in third place with the remaining first-place vote. Bloomsburg finished fourth in the poll with East Stroudsburg, Millersville and Lock Haven completing the poll.

The PSAC Championship will be played on Nov. 10 at the site of the top team in the PSAC West standings.

The women’s basketball coach at Brown University has been charged with assaulting her husband.

Sarah Behn was arraigned Monday on a charge of assault and battery on a family or household member, according to Wrentham District Court.

The Providence Journal reports a police report filed in Foxboro, Massachusetts, says Timothy McGahan, Behn’s husband, told officers she pushed him and pinned him against a wall.

Behn’s attorney, Jerome Sweeney, says Behn denies that and it’s a private matter.

Manziel throws

four interceptions

Jonny Manziel threw four interceptions in the first half of his Canadian Football League debut Friday night, with his Montreal Alouettes trailing the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 38-3 at the break.

After completing a pass for a 5-yard loss on his first play, Manziel threw an interception on the second attempt – and made a tackle.

On his second series, with Montreal down 14-0 to his former Hamilton teammates, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner handed off twice before the Tiger-Cats blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown.

Manziel had another pass intercepted on his third series, with the blame going to running back Tyrell Sutton for mishandling and deflecting the ball to defender Jumal Rolle.

Manziel led Montreal to a field goal on his fourth drive, then threw his third interception early in the second quarter – Rolle’s second of the night. The fourth interception came with 2:22 left in the half.
