Tampa Bay runs streak to 23 with win
Ryan Yarbrough helped extend Tampa Bay’s shutout streak to 23 innings, and the Rays got their only run via video replay in a 1-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night.
Yarbrough (12-5) pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief of Rays opener Hunter Wood. The rookie left-hander gave up two hits and a walk while striking out six, earning his major league-leading 10th relief win.
Yarbrough and three others combined for Tampa Bay’s second straight shutout. Jose Alvarado pitched the ninth for his fifth save and stretched the Rays’ streak of scoreless innings, which included 14 over the weekend in Boston.
Willy Adames drove in the game’s first run. After singles by Ji-Man Choi and Kevin Kiermaier in the second inning, Adames hit a two-out chopper over third base. Adames beat Rosell Herrera’s throw across the diamond, but it took a 43-second review to reverse the original out call.
The run came off right-hander Jorge Lopez, who pitched five innings in his second major league start. Lopez (0-3) gave up five hits and three walks.
Kiermaier had three of Tampa Bay’s eight hits after coming into the game batting .127 in August.
Royals reliever Jake Newberry struck out three in 1 2/3 innings in his major league debut.
Wood pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up two hits with two strikeouts.
Toronto 8, Baltimore 0: Kendrys Morales homered twice, Marco Estrada pitched 5 1/3 innings to win his second straight start and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Baltimore 5-3, improving to 8-0 at home against the Orioles.
Morales hit a one-out solo homer in the fourth, then added a three-run drive in the fifth for his 22nd career multihomer game. Both home runs came off Baltimore right-hander Andrew Cashner.
Dodgers activate closer: All-Star closer Kenley Jansen has been activated off the disabled list for the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier than expected after being cleared by a cardiologist.
Manager Dave Roberts says Jansen is available for Monday night’s series opener against St. Louis.
Jansen hasn’t pitched since Aug. 7 and was on the 10-day DL after being hospitalized for an irregular heartbeat on Aug. 9 when the team was in Denver to play the Rockies.
Jansen was initially expected to miss about a month. He was previously treated for an irregular heartbeat in 2011 and 2012. He has said it’s likely he’ll need offseason surgery to deal with the issue.
“It’s a huge lift,” Roberts said. “He’s the best in the game, so it changes the way they’re (Cardinals) going to manage.”
Jansen is 0-3 with 32 saves and a 2.15 ERA in 51 games. The Dodgers’ bullpen has a 5.17 ERA since Jansen went out.
