PIAA OKs golfer to use motorized cart

The PIAA has granted a request from Waynesburg High School to allow one of its golfers, MaCottie Denjen, to use a motorized golf cart for the remainder of the season.

The school made the request on behalf of the Denjen family. MaCottie Denjen suffers from a hereditary skin disease, Epidermolysis Bullosa Simplex, which causes the skin to be very fragile and to easily blister.

Blistering primarily affects the hands and feet in mild cases, and the blisters usually heal without leaving scars. Severe cases of this condition involve widespread blistering that can lead to infections, dehydration and other medical problems.

The Denjen family submitted a 504 Plan in an effort to rectify the situation. A 504 Plan is a plan developed to ensure that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives accommodations that will ensure their academic success and access to the learning environment.

The Denjens had to assume all responsibilities for the use of the golf cart.

Dukes fall in opener

The Duquesne Dukes were routed by the University of Massachusetts, 63-15, in the college football opener for both teams.

Andrew Ford and Ross Comis each threw two touchdown passes and four different running backs scored touchdowns for UMass.

Duquesne quarterback Daniel Parr threw for a TD and ran one in but was intercepted three times.

Correction

Jimmy Sadler caught a 79-yard pass from Seth Dunn for Chartiers-Houston in a 20-13 loss to Fort Cherry Friday night.

Jamie Dillie returned an interception 78 yards late in the third quarter for the Bucs.
