Small college basketball: W&J scores in final seconds to beat Geneva

Zini Primo made a game-winning layup with 15 seconds remaining as Washington & Jefferson defeated Geneva, 67-63, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at Metheny Field House Saturday afternoon.

Cameron Seemann cemented the victory with a pair of field goals with two seconds left to end a three-game losing streak for W&J, which improves to 1-1 in the PAC and 3-5 overall.

Seemann led all scorers with 23 points.

Zini and Jonathan DeVito also reached double-digits for the Presidents with 17 and 14 points, respectively.

Eric McGee scored 17 points for Geneva (1-1 in the PAC, 3-4 overall).

Millersville 84, California 63: Marcus Adkison made seven three-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points as hot-shooting Millersville defeated California, 84-63, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game.

Caden Najdawi joined Adkison with a big game, finishing with 25 points as the Marauders, who improved to 4-3 overall after winning their PSAC opener, took a 51-32 lead into halftime.

As a team, Millersville made 14 of its 27 three-point field goals.

Collin MacAdams, Brent Pegram and Donte’ Williams all reached double-digit point totals for the Vulcans. MacAdams led Cal (0-1, 1-4) with 16 points.

Chatham 80, Waynesburg 73: Four players scored in double figures as Chatham responded from a 13-point halftime deficit to defeat Waynesburg, 80-73, in a PAC game.

The Cougars, who were behind 44-31 at the break, scored 12 unanswered points to begin the second half and quickly trim the lead with about 14 minutes to play.

Will Sandherr scored a team-high 19 points for Chatham (1-1, 4-2). Isaiah Brown finished with 18 points.

Matt Popeck continued to pace the offensive effort from Waynesburg (2-5, 1-1) with 34 points. Popeck, a Washington High School graduate, went 10 of 19 from the field and made five three-pointers. He was the only player for the Yellow Jackets to score in double figures.

Women’s results

Wash & Jeff 67, Geneva 59: The Presidents, led by a dominating defensive effort in the first half, held on in the second half for a 67-59 victory over host Geneva.

W&J (1-1, 3-5) limited the Golden Tornadoes to 15 points in the first half, three in the second quarter, to take a commanding 33-15 lead into halftime.

Losers of four straight entering Saturday’s game, the Presidents got much-needed scoring from Danielle Parker and Lauren Gilbert.

Parker, a Canon-McMillan graduate, made 9 of 14 field goals for a team-high 19 points. Gilbert finished with 16 points after going 6 of 11 from the field.

Callie Ford was the only consistent threat for Geneva (0-2, 1-4). She scored 24 points while no other player for the Golden Tornadoes reached double digits.

California 69, Millersville 55: Seairra Barrett recorded her second double-double of the season and California benefited from solid production off of its bench to down Millersville, 69-55, in a PSAC game.

Barrett led the Vulcans (1-0, 6-0) with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Brionna Allen, a freshman, led all players coming off of the bench for Cal with 14 points. She entered the game with eight points on the season. The Vulcans’ bench players scored 39 points.

Lauren Lister scored 18 points for the Marauders (0-1, 2-4). No other Millersville player scored more than seven points.

Chatham 79, Waynesburg 61: Chatham, led by the scoring of Ashley McClain, dominated play early and cruised to a 79-61 victory over Waynesburg in a PAC game.

Racing out to an early 11-2 lead to begin the game, Chatham (2-0, 5-3) continued to pull away throughout the opening two quarters. McClain made four of her seven three-pointers in the opening half as the Cougars had a 48-29 halftime lead.

McClain led all scorers with 28 points and six steals. Katie Sieg had 19 points and seven rebounds for Chatham.

Waynesburg (0-2, 2-5) leading scorer Andrea Orlosky continued that trend by pacing the Yellow Jackets, who only shot 37 percent from the floor as a team, with 19 points.
