Small college basketball: Cal women improve to 8-0

Seairra Barrett scored 17 points and California remained undefeated with an easy 77-36 victory over winless Cheyney on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

California (8-0), ranked No. 17 in NCAA Division II, held Cheyney (0-7) to 13 first-half points. The Wolves finished the game with 23 more turnovers (37) than field goals (14).

Barrett was the only player to score in double figures for Cal, though the Vulcans had 14 different players with at least two points.

Cheyney’s Marion herring scored a game-high 18 points.

Waynesburg 82, Geneva 55: Haley Porter scored a game-high 26 points that included five three-point field goals to power Waynesburg to an 82-55 victory over Geneva in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Waynesburg (1-3, 3-6) won for the first time in league play and snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Yellow Jackets pulled away in the second half, outscoring Geneva (0-3, 2-5) by a 49-27 margin.

Andrea Orlosky was the only other player to score in double figures for Waynesburg. She finished with 17 points to go with nine rebounds and six steals.

Men’s results

Tommy Bolte and Jair Rodgers combined for 41 points and made 10 of Concord’s 14 three-point field goals as it defeated California 80-63 in the Joe Manchin Classic at Salem, W.Va.

The loss was the sixth in seven games for California, which will play Kentucky State on Sunday afternoon.

Jermaine Hall Jr. led Cal with 18 points and 11 rebounds but the Vulcans had trouble stopping Concord (7-2) from scoring at long range. The Mountain Lions were 14-for-31 from behind the three-point line.

Bolte led Concord with 22 points, Rodgers followed with 19 and Simun Kovac had 12. The Mountain Lions took charge early, leading by as many as 17 points in the first half.

Cal pulled to within 10 points early in the second half, but a 12-2 run by Concord put the lead out of reach for the Vulcans.

Zyan Collins scored 14 points and Donte Williams had 13 for Cal.

Geneva 83, Waynesburg 75: Ethan Moose scored 18 points as Geneva held off a late charge by visiting Waynesburg to defeat the Yellow Jackets 83-75 in a PAC game.

Geneva evened its overall record at 4-4 and improved to 2-1 in the PAC. Waynesburg, which was playing its second consecutive game without leading scorer Matt Popeck, dropped to 2-2 in the conference and 3-6 overall.

Geneva led by 10 double digits in the second half before Waynesburg made push in the closing minutes, closing to within 77-75 with 2:15 remaining after two free throws by Frank Bozicevic, who scored a game-high 23 points. Those were the final points the yellow Jackets would score as they went the final 4:48 without a field goal.

Nick Rysun scored 15 points for Geneva and Eric McGee had 14.

Brennan Smith had 15 points and Noah Gearhart 12 for the Yellow Jackets.
