Girls basketball roundup: Canon-McMillan girls win section opener
Tamara Mathis and Jenna Cromp each had a double-double to propel Canon-McMillan to a 59-51 victory over Hempfield in a Section 2 game in Class 6A Monday night.
Mathis scored a game-high 24 points and handed out 10 assists and Cromp had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Big Macs (1-0, 2-1).
Hempfield was led by Sarah Liberatore’s 13 points. Riley Sullaberger scored 12 points and Jesse Persin added 10 points.
C-M put the game away in the second quarter, outscoring Hempfield (0-1, 2-1), 20-9. That gave the Big Macs a 33-23 lead and they nearly matched Hempfield point for point the rest of the way.
West Greene 68, McGuffey 32: Kaitlyn Rizor tossed in 17 points to help West Greene knock off McGuffey, 68-32, in a non-section game.
The Pioneers (2-1) led 51-18 at halftime and outscored the Highlanders (1-2), 17-14, in the second half.
West Greene also got strong efforts from McKenna Lampe, who scored 16 points, and Madison Lampe, who had 11 points.
McGuffey was paced by Keira Nicolella’s 9 points.
Peters Township 57, Trinity 26: Peters Township rolled out to a 31-4 lead at halftime and cruised to a 57-26 victory over visiting Trinity in a non-section game.
Makenna Marisa scored a game high 23 points, with the help of 5 three-point field goals. Mackenzie Lehman had a double-double,16 points, 11 rebounds, for the 3-0 Indians.
Trinity (1-2) was sparked by Kaylen Venick’s 12 points.
Fort Cherry 41, Monessen 37: Fort Cherry rallied in the fourth quarter to take a 41-37 victory from Monessen in a non-section game.
The Rangers (2-1) trailed Monessen (0-3) by two, 29-27. But FC outscored Monessen, 14-8.
Qitereh Herdison scored 19 points for Monessen.
Fort Cherry got 19 points from Abby Cooper and 12 points from Mckenzie Saure.
Beth-Center 50, Carmichaels 19: Guard Olivia Greco scored 14 points and had five assists as Beth-Center won its second game in a row, 50-19, at Carmichaels.
Maddy Hunyady followed with 12 points and Elizabeth Trump led the Bulldogs’ rebounders with eight. B-C played strong defensively throughout and held Carmichaels (0-3) to five second-half points and scoreless in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs converted 16 of 22 free throws.
Gina Ranieri led the Mikes with seven points.
Frazier 69, California 42: Brooke Poling and Ashley Moger combined for 43 points to power Frazier to a 69-42 victory over host California.
Poling scored a game-high 26 points as the Commodores (1-2) won for the first time this season. Moger followed with 17 points and helped Frazier build a big first-half lead. California (1-2) was held to five points int he first quarter and trailed 35-20 at halftime.
Cal’s Sydney Smichnick had a big game, scoring 22 points and making 10 of 11 free throws.
Ringgold 57, Charleroi 25: Nay Adams scored 14 points and Ringgold gave head coach Lindsy Muchnock her first victory as the Rams defeated host Charleroi, 57-25.
Jada Cathers scored 12 points for Ringgold (1-2). Charleroi’s record dropped to 2-1.
South Fayette 64, Aliquippa 23: South Fayette continued its hot start by rolling to a 64-23 victory over overmatched Aliquippa.
South Fayette (3-0) held Aliquippa (0-3) to only two points in the first quarter. The Lions then scored 26 second-quarter points for a 42-6 lead at halftime.
Giuliana Gaetano led South Fayette with 14 points, including four baskets from three-point range. Clare Relihan had 13 points.
Avonna Henry’s 10 points led Aliquippa.
Waynesburg 35, Yough 31:
Clara Paige Miller scored a game-high 17 points and Waynesburg pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat host Yough, 35-31.
It was the second consecutive win for Waynesburg (2-1), which entered the fourth quarter tied 26-26 but outscored the Cougars 9-5 over the final eight minutes.
Bree Echegaray had 12 rebounds for Waynesburg and Miller grabbed nine.
Yough hurt its cause by making only five of 19 free throws.
