High School Basketball Roundup: Hempfield holds off Belle Vernon
After falling behind early, Belle Vernon used a surge in the fourth quarter to force overtime but fell to Hempfield, 80-76, in the WCCA Showcase at Hempfield.
Trailing by 12 points entering the fourth quarter, the Leopards clawed back to tie the game at 65-65 and sent it into overtime.
Hempfield (4-1) edged the Leopards in the overtime session behind the scoring of Jules Nicholls, who led all scorers with 28 points. Christian Zilli finished with 16 points for the Spartans.
Three players reached double figures for Belle Vernon (0-5) as it tried for what has turned into an elusive first win. Cam Nusser led the Leopards with 21 points. Larry Callaway finished with 19 points. Mitch Pohlot had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Carmichaels 61, West Greene 33: Matt Barrish scored a game-high 19 points as Carmichaels rebounded from its first loss of the season by defeating West Greene, 61-33, in a non-section game.
The Mikes, who improved to 4-1 overall, jumped out to a 27-16 halftime lead, then scored 19 points in the third quarter to extend their lead.
Al Cree scored 12 points for Carmichaels.
West Greene (1-4) was paced by Drew Wise, who scored nine points.
Chartiers-Houston 75, Jefferson-Morgan 35: Four players scored in double figures as Chartiers-Houston dominated Jefferson-Morgan, 75-35, in a non-section game.
Christian Berry led the Bucs, who improved to 2-3 overall, with 19 points. Anthony Tomassetti scored 16 points and Evan Simpson finished with 12. Sophomore Austin Arnold nearly had a triple-double with 12 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds.
Tahj Jacobs led Jefferson-Morgan (1-5) with nine points.

Thomas Jefferson 79, Canon-McMillan 67: Four players for Thomas Jefferson scored in double figures as the Jaguars defeated Canon-McMillan, 79-67, in a non-section game.
Jenna Clark led the way for the Jaguars with 28 points. Delaney Ronallo had 16, Alissa DeAngelo scored 13 and Gracie Fainnan finished with 12 points.
Thomas Jefferson took an early lead over the Big Macs by scoring 25 points in the first quarter and having a 40-26 lead at halftime.
Canon-McMilan’s Ellie Kotar scored a team-high 17 points. Tamara Mathis scored 15 points and Nayah Williams had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
