High school basketball roundup: Allen scores 1,000th as Wash High girls remain undefeated

Washington senior guard Carley Allen reached 1,000 career points on her first field goal of the game and the Prexies defeated Beth-Center, 54-42, in a Class 3A Section 2 game Thursday night.

Allen, who finished tied with a game-high 15 points, helped the Prexies pull away after halftime. They forced multiple turnovers and held Beth-Center (1-1, 3-3) scoreless in the third quarter to extend their seven-point halftime lead.

Torri Finley scored 11 points for Washington (3-0, 6-0).

The Bulldogs were paced by Elizabeth Trump’s 15 points.

Trinity 39, Montour 27: Courtney Dahlquist scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Trinity won a defensive battle against Montour, 39-27, in a Class 5A Section 1 game.

The Hillers, who have won three consecutive games to improve to 3-0 in the section and 4-2 overall, held Montour to single-digit point totals in all four quarters. They jumped out to a 25-13 halftime lead.

Courtney Tomas scored 12 points for Montour (0-3, 3-3).

Most of the other points for Trinity belonged to Marlaina Bozek, who finished with 12 points, and Julia Chakos, who scored 10.

Peters Township 52, Upper St. Clair 32: Dominating with defense early, Peters Township played to its narrowest margin of victory all season as the Indians defeated Upper St. Clair, 52-32, in a Class 6A Section 2 game.

The Indians limited Upper St. Clair (1-2, 3-3) to eight first-half points to lead at the half, 27-8.

Freshman Journey Thomas led Peters Township (3-0, 6-0) with 16 points. Makenna Marisa scored 14 and Isabella Mills had 12 points. The Indians have won all six games this season by at least 20 points. It’s narrowest margin of victory was 29 points before Thursday night.

Allison Dellicari scored 10 points for USC.

Fort Cherry 37, Carmichaels 32: McKenzie Faure scored a game-high 15 points as Fort Cherry rebounded from a sluggish start to defeat Class 2A Section 3 foe Carmichaels, 37-32.

Scoring only two points in the opening quarter, the Rangers rebounded quickly to tie the game at 13-13 heading into halftime. Fort Cherry (2-1, 4-2) built a five-point lead in the third quarter that it was able to keep for the remainder of the game.

Gina Ranieri scored 14 points for Carmichaels (0-2, 1-7).

West Greene 59, Jefferson-Morgan 5: Eleven different players scored for West Greene as the Pioneers cruised to an easy 59-5 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in a Class A Section 2 game.

Madison Lampe led West Greene (3-0, 6-1) with 12 points. Kaitlyn Rizor scored 11 points and McKenna Lampe finished with 10.

Jefferson-Morgan (0-2, 1-6) failed to score in the second and third quarters.

Avella 44, Monessen 42: Brianna Jenkins’ basketball with only 18 seconds remaining broke a tie and gave Avella a 44-42 road win over Monessen in Class A Section 2.

Monessen (1-2, 1-6) made a fourth-quarter after trailing 38-25 entering the final eight minutes. Led by Qitarah Hardison’s six fourth-quarter points, the Greyhounds rallied and tied the score at 42-42, which set up Jenkins’ game-winning basket that kept Avella (2-0, 4-1) undefeated in the section.

Bess Lengauer and Jordan Rush each scored 13 points for Avella, which has won three in a row.

Marqula Green was the leading scorer for Monessen with 13 points. Hardison finished with 10.

Canon-McMillan 67, Winston Churchill 45: Canon-McMillan put five players in double figures, including three with double-doubles, as the Big Macs cruised to a 67-45 victory over Winston Churchill of Canada in the KSA Disney Classic in Orlando, Fla.

The win moved the Big Macs (4-3) above the .500 mark heading into a game today against Pellico Plains of Tennessee.

Jenna Cromp scored a team-high 15 points for C-M and had 10 rebounds. Tamara Mathis followed with 13 points and 10 assists, Nayah Williams had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Abbey Daniels and Lacey Russell each finished in double figures with 10 points.

The Big Macs took charge early, building leads of 19-9 after one quarter and 41-23 at halftime.

Burgettstown 62, Bentworth 25: Emily Prasko scored 13 points and Hyaden Abbott had 12 as Burgettstown overpowered host Bentworth 63-25 in a Class 2A Section 3 game.

The win evened Burgettstown’s section record at 1-1. The Blue Devils are 4-2 overall.

Ali Petrisek and Katie Babirad each scored six points for Bentworth (0-3, 1-5).

Seton-La Salle 61, Waynesburg 29: Vanessa Hudson scored a game-high 27 points and Seton-La Salle pulled away over the middle quarters for a 61-29 victory over host Waynesburg in Class 3A Section 2.

Seton-La Salle (2-0, 3-3) led 14-0 after one quarter, then outscored Waynesburg 21-11 in the second quarter and 15-3 in the third. The rebels won consecutive games for the first time this season.

Hudson did most of the damage as the only other Seton-La Salle player to score in double figures was Savanna Carr with 10 points.

Julianna Fowler led Waynesburg (1-2, 3-3) with 10 points.

Brownsville 45, McGuffey 32: Defensive-minded Brownsville held visiting McGuffey to 12 second-half points to defeat the Highlanders 45-32 in a Class 3A Section 2 game.

Trailing at halftime, 20-18, the Falcons outscored McGuffey (1-2, 2-5) by 15 points, 27-12, in the second half for the double-digit victory.

Aniya Turpley scored a game-high 17 points for Brownsville (1-2, 4-3), which ended its two-game losing streak.

Lauren Hogue led the Highlanders with nine points.

South Park 71, Charleroi 25: Cassidy Zander scored 21 points and South Park used a fast start to race past visiting Charleroi 71-25 in a Class 3A Section 2 game.

South Park (2-1, 3-3) forged a 20-6 lead after one quarter and built the advantage to 39-16 by halftime.

Maura Huwalt and Danielle Zeprosto each scored 12 points for the Eagles.

Charleroi (0-3, 3-5), which weas playing for the second night in a row, was led by Bella Skobel’s 13 points.

In other games: West Mifflin was a 48-35 winner over visiting Ringgold in Class 4A Section 3. No game details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.

Canon-McMillan 87, Dunbar (Fla.) 52: Canon-McMillan moved its record above .500 by using a huge first half to defeat Dunbar (Fla.) 87-52 at the KSA Classic in Orlando, Fla.

The Big Macs (3-2) scored 54 first-half points and led by 24 at halftime, then stretched their advantage to 74-38 after three quarters over their opponent from Fort Myers, Fla.

No individual scoring totals were available.

Peters Township 60, Gonzaga 29: Peters Township had 14 players score and the Indians overwhelmed Gonzaga, Newfoundland, 60-29, at the KSA Disney Classic in Orlando, Fla.

Peters Township (3-2) led 21-10 after one quarter and then outscored Gonzaga 21-2 in the second quarter. Colin Cate, who scored 14 points, was the only PT player to score in double figures.

The Indians will play Salem (Mass.) at 11 a.m. today.

Moon 60, South Fayette 38: Despite leading after one quarter, South Fayette was no match for Moon, one of the favorites in Class 5A, as the Lions fell 60-38 in a Section 2 game.

South Fayette (1-2, 4-2) took a four-point lead, 14-10, after the first eight minutes. It was then outscored by the Tigers and failed to reach double-digit points in each of the final three quarters.

Connor Mislan led the Lions with 13 points. Joey Alcorn scored 10 points.

Moon (3-0, 6-0) was paced by three players to reach double figurs. Jioni Smith led all scorers with 16 points. Taru Jones and Donovan Johnson scored 14 and 12 points, respectively.
