Nicholas Campalong’s double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds were not enough for Washington & Jefferson’s men’s team to overcome Houghton as the Presidents lost 78-64 Saturday afternoon at the Oberlin College Holiday Classic.

It was the final nonconference game of the season for W&J (5-8).

After a rough first half, the Presidents began to pick up their play in the second half. Trailing 41-29 after 20 minutes, W&J rallied and cut their deficit to seven points, 52-45, with 11:36 left.

A 9-0 run about five minutes later brought W&J to within 61-56, the closest the score had been since early in the first half. Back-to-back three-pointers by Adam Alexander, who finished with 10 points, sparked the run.

Five points would be the closest that the Presidents would get, however, as Houghton (1-8) pulled away late in the game for its first victory of the season.

Mitch DeZort had 11 points for W&J.

Jordan Holmes scored a game-high 20 points for Houghton and Dylan Lambert had 19.

Women’s result

Wilmington 81, Waynesburg 75: Kelly Noll scored 16 points and Wilmington withstood a fourth-quarter comeback by Waynesburg to edge the Yellow Jackets 81-75 in the consolation game of the Bluffton Holiday Tournament.

Wilmington (7-5) built a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter and led 74-60 with five minutes to play. Waynesburg (3-9), which used only seven players, made a late charge, forging a 15-4 run over four minutes to pull to within three points. The Yellow Jackets, however, were forced to foul and Wilmington made enough free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Wilmington was 15-for-16 from the free-throw line.

Both teams were 29 of 72 from the field but the difference in the game was three-point shooting. Wilmington was 8-for-28 while Waynesburg was only 3-for-22.

Noll led four Wilmington players in double figures.

Andrea Orlosky scored a game-high 26 points for Waynesburg on 10-for-19 shooting. Erin Joyce, Monica Starre and Haley Porter each scored 13 points. Starre grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go with five assists and seven steals.
