Small College Roundup: Wallace hits winning shot, Popeck goes for 30 in Waynesburg win.

Marcus Wallace hit a layup with four seconds remaining to give Waynesburg an 88-86 victory over Westminster in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets erased a double-digit lead with less than eight minutes remaining in the game.

Cameron Kane-Johnson tied the game, 86-86, with a basket with 10 seconds to play.

Waynesburg moved to 8-13, 4-10 in the PAC. Westminster fell to 15-6, including 9-5 in the conference.

Matt Popeck and Jon Knab combined for 56 of Waynesburg’s 88 points. Popeck, a Washington High School graduate, scored 30 points and had four assists. Knab added 24 points and five rebounds. Interestingly, Popeck and Knab each were 10 of 16 from the floor. They were the only players in double figures for Waynesburg.

Junior Austin Armwood led Westminster with a career-high 25 points, sinking 7 of 9 shots from three-point range.

Edinboro 79, California 63: Despite a 30-point performance by junior Jahmere Howze on Saturday afternoon, the California University men’s basketball team lost to Edinoro, 79-63, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West play.

The Vulcans fell to 9-13 this season, including 5-11 in league action. Cal remains in seventh place in the divisional standing and 2 ½-games behind Mercyhurst, which played late Saturday night, for the final playoff spot. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots improve to 13-7 overall and 10-6 in conference play.

Howze finished with 30 points on 10-of-18 shooting, converting a season-high five three-pointers. He collected seven rebounds, three on offense, while playing 29 minutes. Howze has totaled at least 20 points in five of the last nine games and now leads the team in scoring this season with 17.4 points per game.

Senior Cordell Smith scored 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting and added four rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes. Isaiah Lewis had seven points and two rebounds off the bench.

Senior guard Keshawn Liggins, the leading scorer in the PSAC, finished with 22 points, six rebounds and six assists for Edinboro. Junior Anthony Coleman scored 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting and collected seven rebounds, four assists and four steals in 26 minutes. Jaymon Mason had 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes.

Chatham 64, Wash & Jeff 49: Points were at a premium for Washington & Jefferson as the Presidents fell to PAC opponent Chatham, 64-49.

The only player to score in double figures for W&J (2-12 in the PAC, 3-18 overall) was Sean Stinelli with 11 points.

The Presidents couldn’t stop the three-headed attack of Chatham (3-11 in the PAC, 6-15 overall) led by Anthony Bomar’s game-high 18 points. Logan Hunter finished with 12 points and Marc Well chipped in with 10 to balance the scoring.

Women’s Results

Edinboro 79, California 66: Four players scored in double figures as No. 15 Edinboro used a balanced offense to defeat California, 79-66, in PSAC West action.

Jontay Walton led the Fighting Scots with 19 points as they led for nearly the entire game, including 32-27 halftime lead.

Michaela Barns and Ciara Rosten each scored 17 points for Edinboro, which improved to 14-2 in the PSAC and 18-2 overall. Michelle Jahn also chipped in with 15 points.

The balanced scoring didn’t go both ways as Cal struggled to find any offense outside of Mia Cushion, who scored 25 points. No other player for the Vulcans, who drop to 13-3 in conference play and 18-4 overall, reached double figures.

Waynesburg 73, Westminster 57: Waynesburg used a big first half to build a lead it would fail to surrender to Westminster, defeating the Titans 73-57 in a PAC contest.

Jumping out to a 17-5 lead after the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets scored 26 points in the second quarter to take a 43-23 lead into halftime.

Led by the scoring two local athletes, Mackenna Drazich, of Avella, and Addie Knetzer, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, each scored a team-high 18 points.

Drazich also led Waynesburg (8-6 in the PAC, 12-9 overall) with a trio of three-pointers.

Monica Starre and Rachel Eng also finished in double figures for the Yellow Jackets with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

The offense for Westminster (3-11 in the PAC, 7-14 overall) was generated by Kristine Fromknecht and Jackie Mathews. Fromknecht finished with 19 points, while Mathews scored 13.

Wash & Jeff 84, Chatham 49: A 22-0 run during the third quarter helped the Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball team to an 84-49 win over Chatham in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action.

The Presidents improved to 18-3 overall and 12-2 in PAC play. W&J stretched its record against Chatham to 30-0.

The Presidents’ largest lead of the game was 44 points at the 7:20 mark of the fourth quarter before the Cougars closed the game on an 18-9 run.

Lauren Gilbert finished with a game-high 18 pointsfor W&J and Taley Dunaway tied her career high with 16 points.

Amirah Moore scored 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting and had five assists, putting her career total at 348 and breaking a tie with Ann Aigner (1986-90) for the sixth most assists in program history. Alie Seto scored 11 points, pulled down five rebounds and handed out three assists.
