Small college basketball roundup: Seto’s career night leads W&J to rout of Thiel
Allie Seto, a freshman forward from Brownsville, scored a career-high 26 points and Washington & Jefferson overpowered Thiel 95-48 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s game Wednesday night at Henry Memorial Center.
Seto made 8 of 10 shots, including 2 of 3 from three-point range, and made 8 of 9 free throws. Seto averages only 6.8 points per game but was too much for Thiel, which was held to just 19 second-half points, including seven in the third quarter.
W&J (13-2, 19-3), which has won four in a row, led 43-29 at halftime. The Presidents scored at least 21 points in all four quarters.
Seto led four W&J players who scored in double figures. Maria Lawhorne, a freshman from Plum, also had a career high, scoring 17 points to go with eight rebounds. Mya Gordon had 12 points and Lauren Gilbert rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points.
Thiel’s Jess Vormelker, a 1,000-point scorer, had 24 points for the Tomcats, who are 2-13 in the PAC and 3-19 overall.
California 62, Gannon 50: Shatara Parsons scored 21 points and California kept the pressure on IUP and Edinboro atop the PSAC’s West Division with a 62-50 win over Gannon at the Hammermill Center.
The win moved Cal to 14-3 in the PSAC and 19-4 overall. Edinboro currently leads the West Division at 15-2. IUP (14-2) had its game against Pitt-Johnstown postponed and rescheduled for tonight.
California forged a double-digit lead in the first half and led by as many as 20 in the second half.
D.J. Hahn, with 17 points, was the only other Cal player to score in double figures. Hahn and Parsons combined for 18 of the Vulcans’ 26 field goals.
Gannon (10-7, 13-10) was led by Nocile LaCava, who scored 13 points.
Waynesburg 70, Chatham 45: Waynesburg’s Addy Knetzer had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and the Yellow Jackets shot 50 percent from the field en route to a 70-45 victory over Chatham in a PAC game at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Waynesburg improved to 9-6 in the conference and 13-9 overall. The Yellow Jackets have won three of their last four games.
The Yellow Jackets led 22-15 after one quarter, then held Chatham (2-13, 4-18) to only six points in the second quarter to open a 39-21 lead.
Knetzer led five Waynesburg players in double figures. Rachel Eng and Erin Joyce each scored 11 points, and Mackenna Drazich and Monica Starre each had 10 points. Starre had seven assists and Joyce made three three-pointers. The Yellow Jackets were 5-for-9 from three-point range.
Katie Sieg, with 16 points, was the leading scorer for Chatham.
Men’s results
Waynesburg 75, Chatham 62: Jon Knab scored 17 points and hot-shooting Waynesburg rolled to a 75-62 victory over visiting Chatham in a PAC game.
Waynesburg (5-10, 9-13) shot 56 percent for the game and made nine three-point field goals. The Yellow Jackets took control of the game with a 14-0 run early in the first half that forged a double-digit lead. Waynesburg led 36-22 at halftime and by as many as 21 points in the second half.
Matt Popeck scored 15 points for the Yellow Jackets and Frank Bozicevic had 11.
Chatham (3-12, 6-16) was only 6 of 30 from three-point range. Will Sandherr led Chatham with 20 points.
Wash & Jeff 67, Thiel 58: Sean Stinelli scored 17 points and made five of Washington & Jefferson’s nine three-point field goals as the Presidents overcame a halftime deficit and rallied to beat visiting Thiel 67-58 in a PAC game.
It was the second home win of the season for W&J (3-12, 4-18). The Presidents trailed 29-23 at halftime but scored 44 second-half points.
Jonathan DeVito and Amos Luptak each scored 11 points for W&J. Luptak made nine of 12 free throws.
Thiel (4-11, 6-14) shot only 33 percent and was held to fewer than 30 points in each half. Avril Campbell was the Tomcats’ leading scorer with 11 points.
W&J took the lead for good at 47-46 on a free throw by Luptak with 8:37 remaining. The Presidents led 61-58 with 2:30 to play, then scored the final six points of the game.
Gannon 74, California 63: Zay Jackson led five Gannon players in double figures with 18 points and the Golden Knights led wire-to-wire in defeating California, 74-63, in a PSAC West Division game in Erie.
Gannon (11-6, 15-8) shot a blistering 57 percent for the game, which was enough to overcome 18 turnovers.
California (5-12, 9-14), which trailed 38-33 at halftime, closed to within two points early in the second half before giving up and 8-0 run to Gannon. The Vulcans never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Cordell Smith scored 18 points and made five of Cal’s eight three-pointers. Jahmere Howze also scored 18 points, Robel Teckle scored 11 and Isaiah Lewis 10.
