EDINBORO – The women’s basketball team at California University picked a bad time to shoot poorly in a game.
Cal made just four field goals in the first half, missed 27 other attempts, scored only 10 points and that paved the way for Edinboro to take an 89-45 victory in the quarterfinals of the PSAC tournament Wednesday.
Edinboro, which raised its record to 24-3, advances to PSAC Final Four and will play West Chester on Saturday at Indiana University. Edinboro is ranked 11th in WBCA Division II Top 25 Poll and Cal came in at No. 24. The Vulcans fell to 24-6.
California didn’t score in the first 7:06 of the first quarter and trailed by 15-0 when Jiahna Flood-Francis made a layup. Abbey Sporio’s layup with 52 seconds left in the quarter was the only other basket for Cal. The Vulcans trailed 18-4 after one quarter and 40-10 at halftime.
Cal missed all 7 three-point field goals in the first 20 minutes and was 2 of 4 from the free throw line. The Vulcans sank only 17 of 66 shots (26 percent) and was 4 of 12 from three-point range.
Shatara Parsons, one of Cal’s scoring leaders, missed her first 11 shots. She finished with eight points. Emily Suckling was the only player to score in double figures with 10 points.
Edinboro’s Michelle Jahn scored 21 points and surpassed 1,000 points and sits at 1,008. Ciara Rosten had her 17th double-double of the season after scoring 12 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
