Basketball roundup: Big first half sparks Charleroi over Carmichaels

Charleroi scored 40 first-half points and rolled to a 76-48 nonsection victory over visiting Carmichaels in a boys basketball game Wednesday night.

The Cougars (4-7) have won three of their last four.

Cameron Carter led Charleroi with 18 points and Caleb Carson had 14. Lee Zanardini scored 11 points to give the Cougars three players in double figures.

Charleroi forged a 21-11 lead after one quarter and increased it to 40-24 at halftime.

Jace McAfee led Carmichaels (6-3) with 10 points. The Mikes had their three-game winning streak end.

Greensburg Salem 68, Ringgold 64: Dante Parsons and Marvell McGowan led a fourth-quarter comeback by Greensburg Salem as the Lions rallied for a 68-64 victory over host Ringgold in a nonsection game.

Greensburg Salem (7-3) was cruising at halftime, holding a 29-22 lead. Ringgold (2-8), however, put together a huge third quarter, outscoring the Lions 23-11, and building a nine-point lead during the quarter.

Greensburg Salem, however, scored 28 fourth-quarter points to win the game. Parsons scored a game-high 29 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. McGowan scored 12 of his 24 points in the final period.

Ringgold had three players score in double figures, led by Jaden Taylor’s 24 points. Chris Peccon followed with 20 points and Jake Mayer had 13.

Jefferson-Morgan 51, West Greene 35: D.L. Garrett and Jalen Torres scored 39 of Jefferson-Morgan’s 51 points en route to a 51-35 non-section win over host West Greene.

Garrett paced J-M (5-5) with 22 points, while Torres chipped in with 17 points.

The Rockets came out firing in the first quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 18-7. The Rockets held onto the 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, in which they scored 18 points again.

Nathan Brudnock and Austin Crouse led West Greene (3-6) with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Pine-Richland 92, Peters Township 71: Even without two of its best players, Pine-Richland defeated host Peters Township 92-71 in a non-section contest.

Phil Jurkovec, Notre Dame commit as a quarterback and a power forward for the Rams’ basketball team, and Andrew Kristofic, an Division I recruit as an offensive tackle and a center for the Rams, both sat out. Despite the absences, the Rams scored more than 23 points in each of the first three quarters, with Dan Petcash scoring 33 points to lead all scorers.

With the game tied after the first quarter, Pine-Richland (7-2) started to pull away in the second quarter, taking a nine-point lead at half. The Rams continued its surge into the third quarter, outscoring the Indians 24-9 in the period.

Greg Shulkosky hit four three-pointers en route to a 20-point effort, while Kyle Polce, Kenny White and Sebastian Kosanovich all chipped in with 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Colin Cote hit eight three-pointers to lead Peters (4-6), while Vinnie Cortese and Sam Petrarca both followed suit with 19 and 10 points, respectively.

Blackhawk 40, South Fayette 38: Blackhawk got defensive in the second half, holding host South Fayette to only 12 points after halftime to defeat the Lions 40-38 in a nonsection game.

Blackhawk (4-5) trailed 26-16 at halftime. The Cougars were led by Mackenyze Kuzbicki, who scored 12 points, and Ryan Hekcathorn, who had 10.

South Fayette’s Drew Franklin scored a game-high 13 points. The Lions are 4-5.

Belle Vernon 63, Thomas Jefferson 52: Belle Vernon played a strong second half and pulled away for a 63-52 victory over host Thomas Jefferson in a nonsection game.

Bryce Washington led Belle Vernon with 20 points. The Leopards led by only 29-28 at halftime.

Jared Hartman and Derek Thomas each scored 11 points for Belle Vernon (6-3). Thomas Jefferson is 2-7 and has lost four in a row.
