Wrestling roundup: McGuffey remains undefeated in section, beats Bentworth
McGuffey combined two falls in the light weights, two more in the middle weights and three forfeits in the upper weights for a 59-15 victory over Bentworth in Class AA Section 2A.
The win keeps the Highlanders undefeated in the section.
Ethan Barr (152) started the match with a fall and teammate Bryton Johnson (160) followed with a pin. Rocco Ferraro (106) and Nate Yagel (112) had the other pins for McGuffey and Jake Garretty won by technical fall at 132.
Mapletown 36, West Greene 24: Mapletown won two of the three bouts that were contested and received four forfeits to defeat visiting West Greene 36-24 in Class AA Section 2A match.
Mapeltown’s J.T. Hennessy scored a first-period fall at 145 pounds and Kevin Hayes had a second-period fall at 160 for Mapeltown.
West Greene’s Conner Main (220) won by first-period fall in the only other bout that was contested.
The total time of the three contested bouts was six minutes.
Chartiers-Houston 48, Avella 14: Six forfeits and two pins led Chartiers-Houston to a 48-14 win over Class AA Section 1A win over Avella.
All the action in the match came in the upper weights, with the Bucs winning two of the three matches by pin and the Eagles winning the other.
Chartiers-Houston’s Tommy Dzadovsky pinned Lyndon Herschell in 1:14 at 182 pounds, and Austin Kuslock followed suit by pinning Dylan Gzikowski in 1:39 at 195 pounds.
Avella’s Randall Kidwell concluded the match with a pin of Brandon Stopperich in 3:56.
South Park 18, Washington 18: South Park pinned three Prexies en route to a 36-18 Class AA Section 1A win over Washington.
South Park’s Anthony Reil started the match with a second-period pin of Asa Sharnik at 145 pounds. Craig Lingren (160) then pinned Casimiur Johnson in the third period, and Garrett Ammon (126) pinned Brandon Hanning in the second period to cap off the victory.
The only Wash High victory not by forfeit came from heavyweight Gerald Comedy, who pinned Nate Schultz in the second period.
Burgettstown 41, Fort Cherry 26: Despite Fort Cherry winning the last four matches of the night, Burgettstown’s fast start led the Blue Devils to a 41-26 win.
After winning at 220 and at heavyweight, Burgettstown dominated, winning four of the five lightweight classes.
Cameron Bertolotti (113) pinned Brian Scott in 3:37, Shane Kemper (120) pinned Jacob Merriman in 1:24, Bill Brown (126) defeated Mason Sweetie by technical fall and Austin Ryan (132) pinned Jake Tkach in 1:10. PJ Smith also pinned Layton Sturgeon in 1:30 for the Blue Devils at 145.
For the Rangers, Shane McIntyre (152), Aaron McIntyre (160), Shane Smith (170) and Matt Cook (182) all won, with Cook pinning Jacob Paich in 2:50.
Belle Vernon 47, West Mifflin 24: As has been the case in several dual meets this season, Belle Vernon dominated the upper weights against West Mifflin and defeated the Titans 47-24 in a Class AAA Section 2A match.
Ian Maloney (132), Neiko Kuntz (145), Brock Godzin (152), Zach Hartman (160), Scott Joll (182) and Mason Nickelson (195) each won by fall for the Leopards with each of the pins except Godzin’s coming in the first period. Logan Seliga (126) won hi bout by technical fall.
Beth-Center 45, Jefferson-Morgan 24: Four Beth-Center pins led the Bulldogs to a 45-24 win over Class AA Section 2A foe Jefferson-Morgan.
In the lightweights, Richard LaRose (113) pinned Mason Palmer in 4:18, and Jimmy Gwyer (120) pinned Peyton Whipkey in 4:53. In the upper weights, Evan Dreucci (182) pinned Justin Maddich in 0:53, and Ronnie White (heavyweight) pinned Michael Ludrosky in 0:29.
Two J-M wrestlers won by fall, as Alex Lang (126) pinned Chase Markoff in 3:30, and Gavin Teasdale (138) pinned Chase Lacey in 0:45.
Trinity 57, Montour 16: Trinity pinned its way to a 57-16 Class AAA Section 4A win over Montour, with five Hillers recording pins in the victory.
Jared Rice (195) and Dom Quarture (220) both won by fall in 2:38 and 0:48, respectively.
A.D. Nelson then pinned Devyn Giovengo in 4:43 at 120 pounds before Micah Finley (132) and Cole Whitmer (160) won by fall in 2:07 and 3:19, respectively.
Montour’s only fall came from Dante Persuitti over Regis Seng in 1:44 at 182 pounds.
Peters Township 57, Bethel Park 15: Peters Township controlled the light weights as it defeated Bethel Park 57-15 in a Class 3A Section 2B match.
The Indians were led in the light weights by Bryce Wilkes (113) who pinned Zuri Griffore in 32 seconds. After Wilkes’ quick pin, the Indians went on to win the next three matches, including decisions from Jordan Marosz (126) and Donovan McMillan, 7-4 and 3-1, respectively.
Jake Hurley (145), Colton Jezioro (152), Brandon Matthews (160), Jeff Markert (195) and Grant Nelson (heavyweight) all earned pins for Peters Township.
