C-M falls to Bethel Park
CANONSBURG – There were times in this game when the Canon-McMillan girls’ basketball team couldn’t do anything but watch Bethel Park score points.
Bethel Park made seven three-pointers in the first half to forge ahead in the second quarter and went on to defeat the Big Macs, 50-37, in a Section 3 game in Class 6A game at Canon-McMillan High School Thursday night.
The Black Hawks, who played nearly even with the Big Macs in three of the four quarters, built a 32-19 lead at halftime behind the scoring of Maria Cerro and the lethal three-point shooting of Olivia Westphal.
Westphal finished with 12 points, all from behind the three-point arc. She had three of her four threes in the first half to help Bethel Park (3-1, 8-3) to a 32-19 lead.
Cerro led all scorers with 20 points, and Madelyn Dziezgowski finished with 13 points for the Black Hawks, who won their third straight game.
Canon-McMillan (1-3, 8-4) was led by Tamara Mathis and Izzy Allen, who combined for 32 points, in the Big Macs second loss in three games.
Mathis, a junior guard, scored a team-high 19 points. Allen, who has grown accustomed to double-double performances this season, finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
The win propels Bethel Park to a tie atop the section with Mt. Lebanon and Peters Township, which lost to Blue Devils Thursday. Both teams are 3-1 in section play.
