Small college basketball roundup: Trest leads comeback to down Cal
Seton Hill’s Cheyenne Trest helped lead a comeback as the Griffins outscored visiting California 25-9 in the fourth quarter to defeat the No. 10 Vulcans 64-58 in a PSAC West Division game Saturday.
The Griffins, who trailed 49-39 entering the final quarter, opened the final frame with a 12-point run in just under four minutes to take the lead.
Seton Hill (8-3, 13-4) iced the game from the free-throw line where it was perfect for the afternoon (17-of-17).
Trest finished with 15 points, converting on all seven of her free throws. Jenna Kaufman led the Griffins with 16 points.
Three players scored in double figures for Cal (10-1, 15-2).
Shatara Parsons led all scorers with 19 points, while Mia Cushion finished with 15 and Abbey Sporio scored 13.
The loss for the Vulcans snaps a 10-game winning streak.
Seton Hill has won four straight.
Waynesburg 80, Geneva 71: Addy Knetzer scored a game-high 28 points as Waynesburg pulled away in the second and third quarters to defeat Geneva, 80-71, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
Knetzer, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, was one of four players to reach double-digits for the Yellow Jackets.
Trailing 14-11 after the first quarter, Waynesburg (6-2, 10-5) scored 23 points in the second and 29 in the third to take a 63-52 lead.
Monica Starre had 15 points for the Yellow Jackets, while Mackenna Drazich and Julie Deklaven each finished with 12 points.
Jodie Carlson led Geneva (1-7, 4-11) with 21 points.
Waynesburg has won five of its last six games.
Men’s Results
Seton Hill 90, Cal 87: The second half and overtime belonged to Seton Hill’s Trevor Blondin.
Blondin scored 26 points after halftime, including a game-winning three-pointer with one second remaining in overtime, to defeat Cal 90-87 in a PSAC West Division game.
He scored a game-high 32 points.
Seton Hill (3-8, 6-10) led 40-39 at halftime, but needed a Spencer Casson dunk with two seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.
Forwards Robel Teckle and Jahmere Howze combined to score 47 points for Cal (4-7 in the PSAC, 8-9 overall). Teckle finished with a team-high 27 points.
Isaiah Lewis also chipped in 19 points for the Vulcans.
Geneva 72, Waynesburg 57: Jimmy Leichliter scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the first half, sparking Geneva to a 72-57 victory over visiting Waynesburg in the PAC.
Leichliter, who made four three-pointers, helped Geneva (3-5, 7-8) forge a 35-23 halftime lead. Waynesburg (3-5, 7-8) shot only 31 percent and could not generate enough offense to fuel a comeback.
Jon Kanb and Matt Popeck each scored 12 points for Waynesburg, which has lost three in a row.
Thomas More 86, Wash & Jeff 62: Simon Clifford scored 19 points, leading four Thomas More players in double figures as the Saints defeated host Washington & Jefferson 86-62 in the PAC.
Clifford scored 17 of his points during Thomas More’s 47-point first half. The Saints (7-1, 11-4), who are in first place in the conference, shot 64 percent in the half and 56 percent for the game.
Brian Lindquist was the only W&J player to score in double figures. He had 10 points as the Presidents fell to 1-7 in the conference and 2-13 overall.
