Basketball roundup: Trinity boys stun Moon on Tigers’ home court
Trailing by one point in overtime, Joey Koroly scored on a layup with six seconds left and Trinity upset Moon, 65-64, in a non-section boys game Wednesday night in Coraopolis.
After Koroly’s go-ahead basket, Moon (11-2) missed a buzzer-beating shot.
Tied at halftime, 27-27, Trinity (10-4) rallied from a seven-point deficit it faced in the third quarter behind the Ecker twins and Koroly.
Jeff Ecker scored a game-high 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked six shots. Zach Ecker finished also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Koroly had 16 points for the Hillers, who extended their winning streak to six games.
Moon, whose only loss prior to Wednesday was against Mars, was paced by Austin Ryan’s five three-pointers that led to a team-high 19 points.
Bentworth 60, California 51:
Bentworth gave its chances of making the WPIAL playoffs a huge boost with a 60-51 victory over host California in Section 2-AA.
The Bearcats combined a big first quarter with Stephen Harner’s sterling 31-point performance to improve their section record to 3-2 and overall mark to 6-4.
Bentworth started quickly and forged a 21-4 lead after one quarter. California (3-3, 8-5) closed to within 44-37 after three quarters but didn’t have enough scoring to complete a comeback.
Levi Jordan also scored in double figures for Bentworth with 11 points.
Austin Grillo’s 14 points led Cal. Cochise Ryan had 11 points.
Girls results
Mapletown 49, Jefferson-Morgan 31:
Abby Antill led all scorers with 19 points as Mapletown defeated Jefferson-Morgan 49-31 to win its second game in a row.
Antill, along with Taylor Vanata, built Mapletown (2-2, 4-8) a 17-6 lead after the first quarter.
Vanata finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Jefferson-Morgan (1-4, 2-11) attempted a quick comeback in the second quarter – the Rockets trailed 24-17 at halftime – but it was averted with a strong second half from the Maples.
Autumn Gustovich and Krista McCartney each scored nine points for J-M.
Geibel 49, Monessen 40:
Gabby and Gillian Yourish combined for 35 points as Geibel defeated Monessen 49-40 in a Section 2-A game.
Gabby Yourish finished with a game-high 23 points, while Gillian Yourish scored 12 points as Geibel (4-1, 6-5) built a 25-13 halftime lead.
Monessen (0-5, 1-13) was led by Quitarah Hardison’s 19-point night. Hardison was the only Greyhound to reach double figures.
Belle Vernon 46, Ligonier Valley 42:
Taylor Kovach and Kelsey Green each scored 10 points as Belle Vernon defeated Ligonier Valley 46-42 in a non-section game.
The Leopards trailed entering the fourth quarter but outscored Ligonier Valley 18-10 to pull away in the final minutes.
Caitlyn Trombley and Lindsay Steeber helped balance the offense for Belle Vernon (6-1, 10-4) with eight points apiece.
Ligonier Valley was led by Lexie Petros, who led all scorers with 15 points.
Greensburg Central Catholic 52, Carmichaels 35:
Greensburg Central Catholic remained in contention for first place in Section 3-AA by pulling away in the second half and winning at Carmichaels, 52-35.
Anna Eisaman scored 21 points and Olivia Stawovy had 18 for the Centurions (6-2, 7-6), who have won five in a row.
Carmichaels (1-7, 4-10) played GCC tough, especially in the first half. After GCC built a 13-3 lead after one quarter, Carmichaels battled back and closed to within 24-20 at halftime.
The Centurions pulled away with a 14-6 margin in the third quarter.
Kristina Aeschbacher paced Carmichaels with 13 points and Jaydn Barnish followed with 11.
