Lauren Gilbert made five three-pointers and finished with 17 points to lead the Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball team past Geneva, 79-41, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon.

The Presidents, who shot 40 percent from the field and 45 percent from behind the three-point arc, jumped out to a 21-6 first-quarter lead that wouldn’t be threatened by Geneva.

Allie Seto and Amirah Moore each scored 13 points for W&J, which improves to 9-1 in the conference and 15-2 overall.

The Presidents also forced 23 turnovers and limited Geneva, 1-9 in the PAC and 4-13 overall, to shoot only 26.5 percent from the field.

Callie Ford and Lauren Tipton each scored 10 points for Geneva.

Bethany 66, Waynesburg 63: A seven-point lead Bethany built in the first quarter would be all the Bison would need.

Even being outscored in the second and third quarters, Bethany held on to defeat PAC opponent Waynesburg, 66-63.

The Yellow Jackets’ Mackenna Drazich’s free throw with 57 seconds remaining cut the deficit to 65-63 but they couldn’t recapture the lead.

Drazich finished with 12 points for Waynesburg, who dropped to 6-4 in the PAC and 10-7 overall.

Chartiers-Houston graduate Addy Knetzer led the Yellow Jackets with 24 points. She also grabbed 12 rebounds.

Bethany’s Kelsea Daugherty led all scorers with 32 points after making 13-of-19 field goals and six free throws. The Bison are 8-9 overall.

Mercyhurst 61, California 53: Three days after defeating Indiana University, the No. 2 team in the nation, Cal found itself on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

The Vulcans couldn’t find consistent offense until the fourth quarter and fell 61-53 to Mercyhurst in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game.

Only scoring 32 points through the first three quarters, the Vulcans 21 points in the fourth quarter came too late.

Mercyhurst, 5-7 in PSAC play and 7-11 overall, outscored Cal 20-9 in the third quarter to take a 42-32 lead behind the scoring of Emily Shopene, who finished with 18 points.

Emilee Norris and Jamaya Shabazz each scored 10 points for the Lakers.

California (11-2 in the PSAC, 16-3 overall) only shot 29 percent from the field (18-of-62) and nine percent from three-point range (1-of-11).

Shatara Parsons scored a game-high 19 points.

Men’s results

Mercyhurst 67, California 47: Lorenzo Collier made four threes and scored a game-high 20 points as Mercyhurst scored 48 points in the second half to defeat California, 67-47, in a PSAC West contest.

Collier, who couldn’t buy a basket in the first half going 0-of-6 from the field, made seven of the 10 shots he took in the second half to lead to Lakers.

Malcolm Walters and Derrick Ellis also scored in double figures for Mercyhurst, 5-8 in the PSAC and 8-8 overall, with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Cal, who drops to 4-8 in PSAC play and 8-11 overall, couldn’t find much scoring outside of Isaiah Lewis’ 17 points. No other player for the Vulcans reached double digits.

It’s the third loss in a row for Cal.

Geneva 81, Washington & Jefferson 76: The Presidents nearly pulled off a comeback again.

Leading by 10 points at halftime, Geneva needed the entire second half to hold off and defeat upset-minded W&J, 81-76, in a PAC game.

Washington & Jefferson tied the game at 67-67 on a Brian Graytok layup with 5:30 left. The next Presidents’ possession they took the lead with two free throws from Brian Lindquist.

Geneva, however, scored nine of the final 13 points of the game to improve to 5-5 in the PAC and 9-8 overall.

Jimmy Leichliter led the Golden Tornadoes with 21 points. Ethan Moose also scored 18 points.

The Presidents, who came back to defeat Waynesburg Wednesday, were paced by Jonathan DeVito’s 21 points. Graytok finished with 16 points.

Washington & Jefferson falls to 2-8 in the PAC and 3-14 overall.

Bethany 93, Waynesburg 77: Bethany shot nearly 58 percent from the field as a team as the Bison downed Waynesburg, 93-77, in a PAC game.

Led behind the scoring of Calique Jones, who finished with a game-high 28 points, grabbed nine rebounds and tallied four assists, the Bison jumped out to a 40-26 lead at the half.

Both teams scored more than 50 points in the second half, but it was too little too late for Waynesburg, who is 3-7 in the PAC and 7-10 overall after losing both games this week.

Bethany (8-2 in the PAC, 8-9 overall) also had Jerron Athey, Liam Davis and Chaice Truex reach double figures.

The Bison also shot 87 percent (20-of-23) from the free-throw line.

Waynesburg was paced with the scoring of Jon Knab, who finished with 25 points. The Yellow Jackets also had two players score in double figures off the bench as Sam Heeter had 17 and Shane Johnson scored 10 points.
