Boys basketball roundup: One quarter does job for Washington
Section 4-AAA leader Washington turned a six-point deficit after one quarter into a 19-point halftime lead and cruised to a 57-37 victory over host Charleroi Monday night.
The win keeps the Little Prexies (7-0, 11-3) undefeated in section. Washington has won six in a row.
Charleroi (0-6, 4-11) had a 12-6 lead after one quarter but that was when Washington’s Dan Ethridge entered the game and the Little Prexies turned to a half-court trap defense that caused the Cougars fits.
Washington outscored turnover-prone Charleroi 28-3 in the second quarter for a 34-15 lead at the break. Ethridge scored 12 of his game-high 18 points in the second quarter.
Joe Mercer and Zahmere Robinson also scored in double figures for Washington with 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Little Prexies have won six in a row.
Caleb Carson led Charleroi with 12 points.
South Park 87, Waynesburg 86, OT: Despite a 40-point performance by Waynesburg’s Darton McIntire, South Park pulled out an 87-86 overtime victory in a Section 3-AAAA game on the Raiders’ home court.
The win enhances South Park’s postseason chances as the Eagles improved to 5-3 in the section and 7-6 overall.
Waynesburg (1-7, 4-11) led 28-17 after one quarter but the game was close the rest of the way. South Park pulled even at 40-40 at halftime and Waynesburg led 52-51 after three quarters. The game went to overtime at 77-77.
McIntire did his best to win it for Waynesburg as he scored 26 of Waynesburg’s 34 points after the third quarter.
Devin Turner led South Park with 25 points and Damon Smith had 23. Michael Graham also hit double figures with 12.
Lucas Garber had 13 points for Waynesburg.
Laurel Highlands 67, Ringgold 40: Bryce Laskey, one of the top scorers in the WPIAL, poured in 35 points and powered Laurel Highlands to a 67-40 victory over host Ringgold in Class 5A Section 1.
The win keeps Laurel Highlands (4-2, 8-6) a one game back in the loss column behind Trinity and McKeesport in the section standings. LH plays a key game Friday night at Trinity.
Laskey, who made four three-pointers, helped the Mustangs pull away in the second half after building a 30-15 halftime lead.
Chris Peccon scored 24 points, including five three-pointers, to lead Ringgold (0-7, 2-13), which has lost seven in a row.
Frazier 60, Carmichaels 57: Brandon Lovis scored 15 points, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 38 seconds remaining as Frazier rallied for a 60-57 victory over host Carmichaels in Section 2-AA.
Lovis’ three-pointer gave Frazier (4-3, 6-7) a 58-57 advantage. He sank two free throws in the closing seconds to end the scoring. The Commodores trailed by six points in the fourth quarter after leading by 11 points at halftime.
Justin Novak led Frazier with 19 points. Dylan Wilson was the leading scorer for Carmichaels (0-6, 6-7) with 16 points.
