Girls basketball roundup: Greco’s record-tying 41 points spark Beth-Center
Sophomore point guard Olivia Greco tied the Beth-Center girls basketball single-game scoring record with 41 points Monday night, leading the Bulldogs to a 68-41 home-court victory over Carmichaels in Section 3-AAA.
The win keeps Beth-Center in fourth place in the section at 5-3. The Bulldogs are 9-5 overall.
Greco’s 41 points tied the B-C scoring record that was had been held by Eryn Ellsworth. Greco scored 19 points in the first half, which ended with Beth-Center holding a 35-17 lead. She scored 10 points in the third quarter and 12 more in the fourth to equal the entire Carmichaels team’s offensive output. Greco made five three-point field goals, converted 12 of 13 free throws and had eight steals.
Kinlee Whited also scored in double figures for the Bulldogs with 12 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds.
Jaden Barnish and Kylie Sinn each had 10 points.
Belle Vernon 38, Southmoreland 22: Belle Vernon remained in the hunt for the Section 3-AAAA title with a 38-22 victory over visiting Southmoreland.
The Leopards (8-1, 12-4) simply had too much defense for the Scotties (3-6, 9-7). Belle Vernon held Southmoreland to only seven field goals and the Scotties were unable to score more than eight points in any quarter.
Caitlyn Trombley led the Belle Vernon offense with a game-high 14 points and one of the Leopards’ six three-pointers. Belle Vernon led 20-12 at halftime and held the Scotties to 10 second-half points.
Frazier 85, Bentworth 54: Scoring wasn’t a problem at Bentworth, where Frazier was an 85-54 winner over the Bearcats in Section 3-AA.
Frazier (5-4, 8-6) had a season-high in points as four Commodores finished in double figures led by Brooke Poling with a game-high 26 points. Jovanna Isacc followed with 21 points, Sierra Twig had 14 and Ashley Moger 12.
Bentworth (0-8, 3-11) also had a season-high scoring output. Hailey Kellerman was the Bearcats’ leading scorer with 16 points followed by Caroline Rice with 13 and Savannah Adams with 12.
Frazier scored 46 first-half points and held a 14-point advantage at the intermission.
Avella 43, Monessen 11: Bailey Lis scored 16 points and Avella kept Monessen winless in Section 2-A with a 43-11 victory on the Greyhounds’ home court.
Avella (3-3, 7-7), which moved to the .500 mark, took control of the game early, building a 9-2 lead after one quarter and 22-7 at halftime.
Monessen is 0-6 in section and 1-14 overall.
South Fayette 64, Moon 31: Jordan Head scored a game-high 19 points and South Fayette won its third straight, 64-31, over visiting Moon in Class 5A Section 1.
Sam Kosmacki also had a solid game for South Fayette (5-1, 9-4) with 15 points.
Moon is 0-5, 3-11.
South Allegheny 32, McGuffey 28: South Allegheny built a large lead, then held off a late McGuffey rally to emerge with a 32-28 victory in a Section 2 game in Class 3A.
Sidney Kirkwood tossed in 10 points for host South Allegheny (4-4, 10-5), which led 29-15 after three quarters but was outscored, 13-3, over the final eight minutes.
Keira Nicolella’s 7 points led McGuffey (1-6, 4-12), which has lost six of the last seven.
Mapletown 34, Geibel 33: Kayla Smith hit a layup with 9 seconds to play to give Mapletown a 34-33 victory over visiting Geibel in a Section 2-A game.
Geibel got a last-gasp shot but it bounced off the backboard.
Smith scored 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for the Maples (4-2, 7-9), who led 16-11 at halftime.
Gabby Yourish scored 12 points and Gillian Yourish added 10 points for Geibel (4-2, 6-7).
Fort Cherry 39, New Brighton 32: A strong second half powered Fort Cherry to a 39-32 victory over New Brighton in a Section 1-AA game.
The visiting Rangers (6-3, 10-5) trailed 17-14 at halftime but outscored New Brighton (1-8, 2-13) in the second half, 25-15.
Fort Cherry was paced by Alex Guerra’s 13 points.
Sidney Cook had a game-high 29 points for New Brighton (1-8, 2-13).
West Greene 68, Jefferson-Morgan 26:McKenna Lampe scored 22 points to lead West Greene to a 68-26 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 2-A game.
Kaitlyn Rizor tossed in 13 points and Madison Lampe added 10 points for the Pioneers (6-0, 14-1), who led 22-11 after one quarter and 40-16 at halftime.
Katey Wolfe scored 9 points for J-M (1-5, 2-13), which has lost 5 straight.
Charleroi 51, Brownsville 32: Three players hit double figures in Charleroi’s 51-32 victory over Brownsville in a Section 2 game in Class 3A.
Maria Claybaugh led the way for the visiting Cougars (7-1, 13-2) with 16 points. Bella Skobel had 14 points and 8 rebounds and Kaitlyn Riley tossed in 11 points. Sierra Short pulled down 8 rebounds and Aislyn Lee handed out 9 assists.
Brownsville (1-7, 3-12) was paced by Alexis Carson, who scored 13 points.
Trinity 59, Albert Gallatin 38: Trinity kept its record in Section 3 of Class 5A perfect at 8-0 with a 59-38 rout of host Albert Gallatin.
The game was officiated by two instead of the usual three officials. The third official was injured in an automobile accident on the way to the game.
Riley DeRubbo powered Trinity’s offense with 21 points and 8 assists. Alayna Cappelli chipped in with 18 points and Jayme Britton had 10 points.
Bryn Bezjak scored a game-high 23 points for AG (2-6, 6-9).
Upper St. Clair 60, Canon-McMillan 45: A fast start and strong second half helped Upper St. Clair cruise past Canon-McMillan, 60-45, in a Section 3 game in Class 6A.
Allison Zelligarri and Kate Groninger each scored 15 points for USC (4-2, 7-6), which led 14-8 after one quarter and outscored the Big Macs (1-5, 9-6) over the final two quarters, 36-23.
Izzy Allen had a double-double for C-M: 16 points and 10 rebounds. Tamara Mathis scored 13. The Big Macs have lost 3 of the last 4 games.
California 71, Jeannette 44: Bailey Vig poured in 29 points as California rolled to a 71-44 victory over Jeannette in a Section 3-AA game.
Love Porter scored 18 for the Trojans (7-2, 8-4).
Dymond Crawford scored a game-high 33 points for the visiting Jayhawks (3-6, 5-11).
OLSH 68, Burgettstown 37: Jocelyn Nagy and Kennede Mickle combined for 33 points to propel OLSH to a 68-37 victory over host Burgettstown in a Section 1-AA.
Nagy had 17 points and Mickle 16 for OLSH (7-1, 13-2), which led 30-18 at halftime. Ashley Norling chipped in with 12 points and Maddie Hoff added 11 points.
Malia Castellini scored a game-high 22 points for Burgettstown (3-6, 5-10).
Chartiers-Houston 65, Washington 40: Alexa Williamson scored 38 points and grabbed 20 rebounds for another double-double in Chartiers-Houston’s 65-40 victory over Washington in a Section 1-AA game.
Madison Simpson dropped in 12 points and Jules Vulcano contributed 10 points for the Bucs (8-1, 11-4)
Washington’s Carley Allen scored 22 points. The Prexies (6-2, 9-4) has a six-game win streak snapped.
