Girls basketball roundup: Charleroi gets defensive, trips Chartiers-Houston
Charleroi held Chartiers-Houston to 10 first-half points on the way to a 55-50 victory in a non-section game Tuesday night.
Kaitlyn Riley scored 18 points, Sierra Short added 15 points and had 9 rebounds and Maria Claybaugh chipped in with 12 for the Cougars (14-2), who have won 5 straight.
Alexa Williamson led C-H (11-5) with 34 points but had only 6 in the first half.
Beth-Center 73, Bentworth 32: Kinlee Whited and Olivia Greco combined for 38 points as Beth-Center overwhelmed Bentworth, 73-32 in a Section 3-AA game.
Whited scored 23 points and Greco added 15 for the Bulldogs (6-3, 10-5), who led 33-15 at halftime. Ten players got into the scoring column for B-C.
Caroline Rice led Bentworth (0-9, 3-12) with 15 points.
Fort Cherry 40, Brownsville 32: Abby Cooper scored 17 points and Karis Zafaras almost had a double-double while leading Fort Cherry to a 40-32 victory over Brownsville in a nonsection game on the Rangers’ home court.
The win is the third straight for Fort Cherry (11-5). The Rangers doubled up Brownsville in the first half, leading 20-10 at halftime. Fort Cherry scored another 20 points in the second half.
Zafaras backed Cooper’s 17-point game by scoring eight points and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.
Alexis Carson led Brownsville (3-13) with 13 points.
Waynesburg 39, Mapletown 32: Jordan Sibert scored nine points and had five steals, and Waynesburg used two big quarters to defeat Mapletown 39-32 in a nonsection game.
Waynesburg (4-11), which has won two in a row, scored 29 points over the middle two quarters to take a 34-21 lead into the final eight minutes.
Abby Antill and Taylor Vanata each scored nine points for Mapletown (6-10).
Belle Vernon 64, Laurel Highlands 37: Keira Boff scored 19 points and Belle Vernon played another strong defensive game in beating host Laurel Highlands 64-37 in a nonsection contest.
Belle Vernon (13-4), which held Southmoreland to 22 points Monday night, limited Laurel Highlands (2-15) to 16 first-half points as the Leopards forged a 14-point halftime advantage.
Caitlyn Trombley scored 11 points for Belle Vernon, which extended its winning streak to five games.
Taylor Smith and Allison Lowery each had 13 points for LH.
