Small college basketball roundup: Vulcans shoot down Clarion

Robel Teckle scored a game-high 24 points and made six of California’s 11 three-point field goals as the Vulcans shot down host Clarion 85-68 in a PSAC West Division game Wednesday night.

Teckle made 8 of 11 shots from the field, including 6 of 8 from three-point range, grabbed nine rebounds and had four assists as California (4-9), 8-11) ended a three-game losing streak.

Teckle led four Cal players in double figures. Jahmere Howze came off the bench to score 19 points, and Cordell Smith and Philip Alexander each had 15. Alexander scored 11 of his points int he first half, when Cal took control fo the game and built a double-digit lead.

Clarion (0-13, 3-16) lost its ninth game in a row. The Golden Eagles received 22 points from Cameron Grumley.

Saint Vincent 61, Wash & Jeff 53: Tom Kropka led a balanced Saint Vincent attack with 11 points and the Bearcats remained undefeated at home with a 61-53 victory over Washington & Jefferson in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Saint Vincent (9-2, 12-6) had only one more field goal than W&J but the Bearrcats did most of their damage at the free-throw line, where they were 15 of 28. W&J went to the free-throw line 15 times, making eight.

Eleven different Saint Vincent players scored. Shemar Bennett joined Kromka in double figures with 10 points.

Brian Lindquist had a big game for W&J (2-9, 3-15), scoring a game-high 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. No other W&J player scored in doduble figures.

Grove City 66, Waynesburg 54: Waynesburg lost its sixth straight contest, a 66-54 loss at Grove City. Five of the Waynesburg’s six losses have been by double digits.

The Wolverines (5-6, 12-6) had four scorers in double digits as James Wells, Nate Peters, Cory Huff and Justice Rice scored 14, 13, 10 and 10 points, respectively. Rice, a Monessen graduate, also grabbed six rebounds.

Grove City led by as many as 17 in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets cut the early deficit to six at halftime. Five minutes into the second half, Matt Popeck, a Wash High grad who scored 13 points for Waynesburg (3-8, 7-11), hit a jumper to bring the Yellow Jackets within one point. Grove City then went on a 16-2 run to put the game out of reach.

Waynesburg shot 30 percent from the field and 62 percent from the free-throw line. Grove City blocked 11 shots.

Women’s results

Saint Vincent 69, Wash & Jeff 58: A hot start by Saint Vincent carried the Bearcats to a 69-58 victory over Washington & Jefferson in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

The win pulled Saint Vincent (8-3, 11-7) to within one game of second-place W&J (9-2, 15-3) in the PAC standings.

Saint Vincent scored 28 first-quarter points and forged a 12-point lead. The Bearcats made four of their seven three-pointers during the pivotal opening quarter.

The Presidents battled back and closed to within 49-42 after three quarters but couldn’t overcome shooting only 33 percent and making just four of 19 three-pointers. W&J did draw to within 49-45 after Lauren Gilbert, who scored 14 points, made a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter.

Saint Vincent maintained its lead despite not making a field goal in the final 5:14. The Bearcats made 24 of 28 free throws.

Mara Benvenuti led Saint Vincent with 20 points and Babette Sanmartin had 13.

Amirah Moore was W&J’s leading scorer with 19 points. Daneille Parker had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

California 71, Clarion 39: California scored the first 15 points of the game and was never challenged during a 71-39 victory over host Clarion in a PSAC West Division game.

The win keeps California (11-2, 16-3) tied with Edinboro for second place in the West, a half-game behind first-place Indiana.

Mia Cushon had a huge game for Cal, posting a double-double with game highs of 22 points and 16 rebounds. She also had four steals and four assists. Shatara Parsons, with 17 points, was the only other Cal player to score in double figures. Parsons also had five steals.

The Vulcans led 21-2 after one quarter and led by as many as 34 points in the second half.

Clarion (2-11, 7-12) committed 30 turnovers. Tynita White and Tracy Wiehe each came off the bench to score 11 points for the Golden Eagles.

Grove City 61, Waynesburg 49: Grove City held Waynesburg to 22.7 percent shooting in the second half to defeat the Yellow Jackets 61-49. The Wolverines (7-4, 12-6) have won nine of their last 10 games while Waynesburg (6-5, 10-8) has lost three straight.

After leading 19-14 after the first quarter, the Wolverines only led by one point, 34-33, at halftime. Grove City held the Yellow Jackets to only five points in the third quarter and then 11 points in the fourth quarter to coast to the double-digit victory.

The Yellow Jackets trailed by only five points with about four minutes to play, but McKenzie Black immediately nailed a three-pointer to end the comeback. Black scored nine points and made Grove City’s only two three-pointers.

Lexie Arkwright and Laura Buchanan led the Wolverines, combining for 28 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocks.

Rachel Eng led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points.
