High School Basketball: Garrett goes over 1,000 points in J-M’s loss

Frazier outscored Jefferson-Morgan, 9-2, in overtime for a 63-56 victory in a Section 3-AA game.

D.L. Garrett scored a game-high 24 points and Jalen Torres tossed in 18 points for the host Rockets (1-7, 7-10), who lost a 35-29 halftime lead. Garrett went over the 1,000-point mark for his career and stands at 1,001.

He became the 14th player – male or female – to accomplish the feat. Garrett’s father, Dennis, finished with 1,356 points before graduating in 1975. He accomplished it in three seasons on varsity.

D.L. Garrett is one of four athletes from Pitt Gas to reach the milestone. Calvin Wilson, Hannah Yourchik and the two Garretts make up the group.

Brandon Lovis paced the attack for Frazier (5-3, 7-8) with 16 points. Bradley Poling and Luke Santo each scored 13 points.

Regulation ended 54-54.

Washington 57, Southmoreland 50: Southmoreland nearly ended its four-game losing streak.

That was until Washington put together a 23-point fourth quarter to defeat the Scotties, 57-50, and complete the comeback victory in Section 4-AAA game.

Trailing by 10 points entering the final eight minutes, 44-34, the Prexies used turnovers to turn the tide to win their eighth consecutive game.

Isaiah Walton led Wash High (9-0, 13-3) with 27 points.

Southmoreland (3-6, 4-13) was paced by Dylan Eicher’s 15 points. Ronnie Robinson also had 10 points.

Belle Vernon 87, Waynesburg 73: Bryce Washington scored 21 points to pace Belle Vernon to an 87-73 win over Waynesburg in a Section 3 game in Class 4A.

Joe Sabolek added 15 points, Derek Thomas 12 and Logan Pfronger 11 for the Leopards (7-2, 12-4), who led 44-35 at halftime.

Darton McIntire scored a game-high 31 points for Waynesburg (1-9, 4-13). Avery McConnville chipped in with 13 points.

Chartiers-Houston 70, California 45: A 23-7 run in the second quarter sparked Chartiers-Houston to a 70-45 victory over California and clinched a playoff berth in Section 3-AA.

The Bucs (8-0, 13-4) had four players in double figures – Cam Hanley with 25 points; Andrew Clark with 17, Noah Minney with 14 and Zack Southern with 12.

Cochise Ryan’s 16 points paced the visiting Trojans (4-4, 9-6), who trailed, 34-17, at halftime. Colin Phillips added 10 points.

Avella 50, Mapletown 47, OT: Matt Craig scored 5 of his 15 points in overtime to help Avella take a 50-47 victory over Mapletown in a Section 2-A game.

Avella outscored Mapletown, 10-7, in overtime after regulation ended in a 40-40 tie. Owen English added 10 points for the Eagles (2-5, 2-11).

Ronnie Burkholder-Walter led Mapletown (0-7, 0-15) with 12 points. Ethan Carter and Ryan Tuttle scored eight points apiece.

Monessen 74, West Greene 33: Monessen stayed undefeated in Section 2-A play as the Greyhounds defeated West Greene, 74-33.

Four players scored in double figures for Monessen (6-0, 7-7), including a game-high 19 points and eight assists from Cory Fleming. Lyndon Henderson and Elijahwa Payne each scored 15 for the Greyhounds, who raced out to a 48-18 halftime lead.

Vaughn Taylor also had a productive night for Monessen, finishing with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Nathan Brudnock led West Greene (4-2, 6-10) with 15 points.

Canon-McMillan 58, Ringgold 33: All Canon-McMillan needed was the first half as the Big Macs defeated Ringgold 58-33 in a non-section game.

Outscoring Ringgold by 14 points in the first quarter and 11 points in the second, C-M took a 40-15 lead into halftime.

Jason Fowlkes scored 13 points, while Drew Engel tallied 11 as C-M (14-1) won its 10th consecutive game.

Ringgold (2-15) was paced offensively by the scoring of Jayden Taylor and Demetrius Butler. Taylor scored 15 points. Butler finished with 11.

Bentworth 63, Fort Cherry 49: Levi Jordan and Steven Harner combined to score 42 points as Bentworth defeated Fort Cherry 63-49 in a Section 3-AA game.

Ryhan Culberson didn’t play for Fort Cherry (6-3, 8-8).

Jordan scored a game-high 22 points, while Harner finished with 20 points as Bentworth (5-4, 9-6) won its third game in a row.

Zach Vincenti and Nate Higham each scored 14 points for the Rangers.

Elizabeth Forward 60, McGuffey 56: Will Greijack scored 20 points as Elizabeth Forward defeated McGuffey 60-56 in Section 3-4A and hand the Highlanders their sixth loss in seven games.

The Warriors jumped out to a 32-25 halftime lead before McGuffey narrowed the deficit by outscoring them 15-11 in the third quarter.

Zach Lewis and Pat Filson also reached double figures for Elizabeth Forward (3-7, 7-10) with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

It also ended a two-game losing streak for the Warriors.

McGuffey (3-6, 10-7) was led by C.J. Cole’s 23 points. Trent Belleville scored 13 points.

Charleroi 70, Beth-Center 43: George Lukach scored a game-high 21 points as Charleroi defeated Beth-Center 70-43 for the Cougars first Section 4-3A victory.

Scoring 35 points in each half, Charleroi (1-7, 5-12) took a 15-point advantage into halftime, 35-20.

Cam Carter and Joe Caruso each scored 11 points for the Cougars.

J.J. Green and Andrew Bower led Beth-Center (2-6, 5-11) with 15 points each. All of Bower’s points came from behind the three-point arc.

Baldwin 45, Peters Township 40: Peters Township struggled to find offense in the first and fourth quarters as the Indians fell to Baldwin 45-40 in Section 2-6A play.

Scoring a combined 14 points in the opening and final quarters, Peters Township (1-8, 5-11) was outscored in the 16 minutes 24-14.

It was tied 23-23 at halftime, and 33-33 after the third quarter Mike Goga finished with a team-high 13 points for the Highlanders to help earn their third straight victory.

Nick Fiumara also had 11 points for Baldwin (3-5, 8-8).

Petes Township’s Colin Cote made four three-pointers to lead all scorers with 18 points.
