Small college basketball roundup: Cal moves back into PSAC West lead; Knetzer sets Waynesburg record
Shatara Parsons scored 25 points and California moved back into first place in the PSAC’s West Division with a 61-41 victory over Slippery Rock Saturday at the Convocation Center.
Cal is 18-3 overall and 13-2 in the West, a half-game better than Indiana, which was upset at Mercyhurst.
The Vulcans held Slippery Rock (8-7, 10-10) to only 15 first-half points and 26 percent shooting for the game. Cal led by as many as 27 points.
Parsons, who made 12 of 22 shots and grabbed 11 rebounds, was the only Cal player to score in double figures. Mia Cushon and Abbey Sporio each had nine points.
Waynesburg 84, Thiel 66: Addy Kenetzer led six Waynesburg players in double figures with 19 points and also grabbed nine rebounds to become the school’s all-time leader as the Yellow Jackets won at Thiel, 84-66, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
All five Waynesburg starters scored in double figures and Andrea Orlosky came off the bench to tally 10 points for the Yellow Jackets (7-5, 11-8), who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Erin Joyce scored 17 points, Rachel Eng had 14, Monica Starre 13 and Mackenna Drazich 10. Joyce made four of her five three-point field goals in the first half, when Waynesburg built a 46-31 lead.
Knetzer, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, now has 971career rebounds. She also moved into second place on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,482 points.
Jess Vormelker scored a game-high 23 points to lead THiel (2-10, 3-16), which has lost 10 in a row.
Wash & Jeff 60, Grove City 55: Danielle Parker scored 14 of her 21 points in the second half, leading Washington & Jefferson to a 60-55 come-from-behind victory over host Grove City in the PAC.
W&J (10-2, 16-3) trailed for much of the game. Grove City (7-5, 12-7) led 26-21 at halftime and 42-37 after three quarters.
W&J opened the fourth quarter with a 12-2 run to take the lead. Grove City regained the advantage at 50-49 with a little more than two minutes remaining, but a layup by W&J’s Amirah Moore gave the Presidents the lead for good and triggered a 7-0 run by the visitors. Moore finished with 15 points and Lauren Gilbert, who had a key three-pointer in the fourth quarter, had 12.
Lexie Arkwright led Grove City with 19 points. The Wolverines were held to only 30 percent shooting.
Men’s results
Slippery Rock 86, California 65: Micah Till scored 27 points to lead Slippery Rock to a 86-65 victory over cold-shooting California in the PSAC’s West Division.
Slippery Rock forged a 46-27 halftime lead against Cal (5-10, 9-12), which was held to 37 percent shooting for the game.
Brandon Simmons had 14 points and Richard Bivens scored 12 for Slippery Rock (11-4, 17-4).
Jahmere Howze scored 14 points and converted 11 of 14 free throws to lead Cal in scoring. Isaiah Lewis had 12 points and Philip Alexander 11.
Thiel 73, Waynesburg 68: Tyreik Burton scored 22 points and Thiel overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat visiting Waynesburg 73-68 in a PAC game. It is the seventh consecutive loss for the Yellow Jackets.
Waynesburg (3-9, 7-12) led 39-31 at halftime but Thiel rallied with 42 second-half points. The Tomcats made three fewer field goals than Waynesburg but took advantage of a huge edge at the free-throw line. Thiel was 26 of 33 while Waynesburg made only 15 of 23 free throws.
Buston led four Thiel players in double figures.
Jon Knab and Frank Bozicevic each had 12 points to pace Waynesburg. Marcus Wallace scored 10 points.
Grove City 68, Wash & Jeff 53: Cory Huff scored 14 points and Grove City climbed to the .500 mark in the PAC with a 68-53 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson.
Grove City (6-6, 13-6) took control of the game in the first half, building a 38-17 lead at halftime. Huff had a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds to go with his 14 points. Andrew Beckman had 13 points and nine rebounds.
W&J (2-10, 3-16) was held to 30 percent shooting. Sean Stinelli scored 15 points and made four three-pointers. Mitch Dezort followed with 13 points.
