High school basketball roundup: Henderson scores 33 in Monessen victory

Lyndon Henderson scored 33 points and powered Monessen to an 81-55 thumping of host Southmoreland in a non-section boys basketball game Wednesday night.

Henderson, who last week set the Monessen single-game scoring record, led four Greyhounds in double figures. Cory Fleming followed with 15 points, Elijahwa Payne had 14 and Vaughn Taylor 10. The Greyhounds (10-7) have won six in a row.

Jason Szatkowski paced Southmoreland (4-15) with 15 points.

Cornell 52, Fort Cherry 40: Zaire Harrison led three Cornell players in double figures with 14 points and the Raiders used a key four-minute stretch of the thiord quarter to pull away from Fort Cherry for a 52-40 non-section win on the Rangers’ home court.

Cornell led 22-20 at halftime but outscored Fort Cherry 19-6 in the pivotal third quarter.

Nate Higham scored 13 points to lead Fort Cherry in scoring.

Brownsville 66, Beth-Center 58: Beth-Center got it offense going in the second half but the Bulldogs couldn’t overcome a 36-point performance by Brownsville’s Shandon Marshall as the Bulldogs dropped a 66-58 game in Section 4-AAA.

Beth-center was held to 15 first-half points but was unable to rally in the second half despote scoring 43 points after intermission, including 27 in the fourth quarter.

J.J. Green led Beth-Center (2-8, 5-13) with 21 points. Andrew White followed with 10.

Brownsville improved to 3-6 in section and 7-10 overall.

Girls results

Greensburg CC 39, California 36: California’s Bailey Vig scored a game-high 15 points but Greensburg Central Catholic pulled out a 39-36 home-court victory over the Trojans in a key Section 3-AA.

The teams are now tied for second place in the section. GCC improved to 9-7 overall while Cal slipped to 11-5.
