Wash High hires Moore as girls basketball coach
Ron Moore won’t need any introduction to his surroundings.
The Washington School Board hired Moore as the girls varsity basketball coach at a special meeting Thursday afternoon.
Moore played, and started, for the Prexies over the course of the mid-1980s winning streak that lasted 52 games and earned Wash High a PIAA championships in 1984 and 1986. The streak still ties for the longest in WPIAL basketball history.
He was named the Observer-Reporter Boys Basketball Player of the Year in 1986.
After high school, Moore played at Waynesburg College under longtime coach Rudy Marisa. He was a member of the 1987-88 Yellow Jackets’ team that advanced to the final four in the NAIA tournament.
Moore coached eighth- and ninth-grade teams at Trinity.
“Now I’m here,” Moore said after trying to apply for positions at his alma mater previously.
“I’ve coached some of these kids through grade school. I can’t wait to sit down with the children and their parents to discuss discipline and strategy.”
He replaces Mike Maltony, who after spending 12 seasons as the Prexies coach, accepted a position as the boys varsity coach at Avella in May.
“I’m super excited,” Moore said. “I can’t wait. I promise these kids will no longer just be a part of a team, they will be part of a program.”
