MaVorhis gives Wild Things win, boost

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich – Levi MaVorhis pitched six shutout innings in his Wild Things debut, Hector Roa had a four-hit night and Roman Collins drove in three runs as Washington cruised to a 9-4 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums Saturday.

MaVorhis (1-0), who was signed by the Wild Things Thursday after pitching for three seasons in the St. Louis cardinals’ farm system, gave up five hits and one walk. The former Kansas State pitcher struck out five.

Washington gave its new pitcher a lead before he stepped onto the mound for the first time, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. The Wild Things led 4-0 before breaking the game open with a five-run sixth inning.

The Wild Things had 14 hits with every starter collecting at least one. The Wild Things scored the game’s first nine runs.

Roa led the Washington offense by going 4-for-5 with a double. Collins was 3-for-5, scored twice and drove in three runs. Collins ha a run-scoring single in the second inning that made the score 3-0, and added a two-run double to make it 7-0 in the sixth.

James Harris went 2-for-5 and scored three times. Brett Marr doubled and scored twice.

Traverse City avoided the shutout with a run in the eighth off reliever James Meeker and scored three times in the ninth against Jared Crescentini.

Zach Strecker was brought in with the bases loaded in the ninth and got the final out for his 15th save.
