At The Meadows

Stuck in an uncharacteristic seven-race losing streak, Classicality changed tactics and snapped his skid with a rallying victory in Monday’s $18,000 Preferred Handicap Trot at The Meadows.

Classicality performed well enough during his losing streak, missing the ticket just once while racing at or near the front.

To get that elusive win, however, Brian Zendt ducked from post 6 and followed the live cover of PL Jerico.

Classicality roared wide through the lane to score in 1:541/2 length better than long shot Dreamsteeler. PL Jerico saw his four-race winning streak end while saving show.

Lisa Dunn owns and trains Classicality, an 8-year-old Classic Photo-Penn Worthy Lane gelding who now boasts $627,852 in career earnings.

Aaron Merriman and Dave Palone each piloted three winners on the 13-race card.

DB breaks leg

Panthers cornerback Ross Cockrell broke his left tibia and fibula during practice Monday at the team’s training camp at Wofford College.

The team said Cockrell will need surgery, but has not said if he is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

It is the second severe injury in three days for the Panthers, a team that went 11-5 last season and earned a wild-card spot.

Carolina lost starting right tackle Daryl Williams on Saturday to a dislocated patella and torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee. The Panthers have not said if Williams will have surgery or if he will try to recover without it.

Cockrell was injured when he collided with wide receiver Torrey Smith in the end zone while trying to break up a pass.

Several teammates openly grimaced and quickly looked away after checking on Cockrell, clearly distraught at the sight of his leg. Several players began helping him onto the cart and tapped him on the shoulder pads while others took a knee and prayed before he left on a cart.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera ended the practice session immediately after Cockrell’s injury.

“Ross was doing some really good things,” Rivera said after practice, before it was announced the leg was broken.”

Miller family speaks

out on drowning

Olympic skier Bode Miller and his wife, Morgan, hope that by talking about their 19-month daughter’s drowning death, they can prevent other parents from experiencing such heartbreak.

The couple appeared in their first public interview Monday on NBC’s “Today” show.

Morgan described visiting her neighbor’s home with their children in June when she realized that daughter Emmy was missing. She saw a sliver of light coming from the door leading to the backyard and said her “heart sank.” She opened the door and saw her child floating in the pool.

Their child died the next day at a hospital. Bode Miller said her brain went too long without oxygen.

Bode Miller said talking about her death helps them to heal and maybe helps prevent it from happening to other parents.

Hawks waive Melo

The Atlanta Hawks have waived Carmelo Anthony, making official the move that was expected when the 10-time All-Star was traded from Oklahoma City this month.

The 34-year-old Anthony may now sign with another team as a free agent. He averaged 16.2 points with Oklahoma City this season.

The Hawks acquired Anthony, a protected 2022 first-round draft pick from Oklahoma City and Justin Anderson from the Philadelphia 76ers in the three-team trade July 19.

In that deal, the Hawks traded forward-center Mike Muscala to Philadelphia and point guard Dennis Schroder to Oklahoma City. Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot was traded from Philadelphia to Oklahoma City.
