Wild Things end road trip with loss
MARION, Ill. – Joe Duncan drove in three runs and Southern Illinois scored five times in the fourth inning en route to a 10-4 victory over the Wild Things Sunday night at Rent One Park.
Washington ended its six-game road trip to Illinois with a 4-2 record.
One day after scoring five runs in the top of the 10th inning to beat the Miners, 9-4, the Wild Things led 3-2 in the second inning but Southern Illinois knocked out starting pitcher Frank Trimarco (4-1) in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. Washington had a costly error in the inning that led to four unearned runs and the Wild Things never recovered. Duncan had a two-run double and Romeo Cortina smacked a run-scoring triple for the Miners in the big fourth inning.
Washington’s Carter McEachern was 3-for-4. He singled home James Harris, who opened the game with a double for the third consecutive day, in the first inning and had another run-scoring hit in the second. Mike Hill hit a solo home run, his fifth homer of the season, in the sixth inning. Hector Roa and Chase Simmons each had two-hit games.
Rookie Aaron Rozek (1-0) pitched six innings for his first professional victory. He walked three and struck out five.
Trimarco gave up eight hits and five runs (three earned) in 3 1/3 innings.
Washington, which is in first place in the Frontier League’s East Division, is off until Tuesday night when it begins a three-game series at Wild Things Park against the Traverse City Beach Bums.
