Poignant described the PIAA Track and Field Championships for Savannah Shaw. The senior ran her best and final scholastic race in an Upper St. Clair jersey, finishing fourth in the 1,600-meter run with a personal best time of 4:49.51.

“Although I am happy with how I performed at my last race for USC, I’m still a little sad that it’s all over,” Shaw said.

“Even so, my coach and I focused on how much good there is to look back on and look forward to. These past three years of running for USC have been one huge amazing adventure.”

Shaw dominated the cross country, indoor and outdoor track scenes, shattered many school records and participated in the most prestigious events from the national championships to the Penn Relays.

On May 26, she capped her high school track career when she secured all-state recognition with her best performance ever on the oval at Shippensburg University. Though she trailed two-time champion Taryn Parks of Greencastle, Shaw kept the pace with the third-place Penn Relays finisher until finishing fourth with her first sub-4:50 time.

“Finally breaking 4:50 was such an awesome feeling,” Shaw said. “Even though it was only by a second, I’m so happy to get that time. I was hoping for a better place but I gave the race all I could.”

Shaw has given the program her all, particularly on the track. She is a two-time WPIAL champion in the mile. She even qualified for this year’s state championships in the 800-meter run but scratched to focus on the 1,600.

She also was the third-place finisher in the High School Girls Mile Run during the Penn Relays this spring and submitted a 4:51.99 time and placed eighth overall for the women’s mile during the New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships held in New York City.

“I am so excited for what’s to come for me and for this team,” Shaw said.

Shaw is off to North Carolina State University to compete in cross country and track. In cross country, she was the WPIAL runner-up and the bronze medalist at the PIAA Championships last fall. Plus, she finished 16th in the national championships.

“Savannah is very aerobically fit. She is a tactical racer with a nasty kick. … She loves training and racing and she is totally invested in long term goals. It’s great to know the best is yet to come,” said USC coach Doug Petrick.
