Girls Swimming & Diving MVP – Abby Matheny
Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend but silver and gold proved dear to Abby Matheny during the WPIAL swimming championships at the University of Pittsburgh’s Trees Pool. The Upper St. Clair senior grabbed gold in the 200-yard freestyle, winning the race for the second time in her career with a 1:51.38 time. She almost went out as a double winner but settled for silver in the 500 freestyle. Matheny anchored the Panthers’ 200-yard freestyle relay to another silver medal, finishing in 1:36.50, only .34 off the winning pace set by North Allegheny. Her 400 relay team took third place. All that glittered enabled USC to secure runner-up honors (255) in the team standings, behind North Allegheny (327) and ahead of Mt. Lebanon (252). At the PIAA Championships, Matheny gained a spot on the podium twice with an eighth-place finish in the 200 freestyle and sixth in the 500. An All-America swimmer, Matheny is bound for Williams College in the fall.
