Nova gives up 3 runs in Pirates’ loss

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Yonny Chirinos struck out six over three innings, and Micah Johnson homered, stole a base and scored twice, as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-3 in a spring training game Wednesday in Bradenton, Fla.

Chirinos allowed one run and three hits.

Pittsburgh pitcher Ivan Nova, who will be the Pirates’ starter when they open the season March 29 at Detroit, gave up three runs and six hits in five innings.

Pittsburgh had eight hits, including a solo home run by third baseman Eric Wood in the seventh inning off former Washington Wild Things pitcher Vidal Nuno. It was the lone run allowed by Nuno, who struck out four in two innings.

Josh Bell had two singles and scored a run for Pittsburgh.
