At The Meadows

Lord Of Winterfell blew up the tote board when he angled off the cones late and exploded past the tiring leaders to pull off a 35-1 shocker in Saturday’s $20,000 Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows.

Lord Of Winterfell was a ground-saving fourth for most of the mile, biding time while stablemates Lincolnjames and Mykindachip waged a protracted duel for the lead. When Brady Brown asked him for pace, the 5-year-old Western Ideal-Caila Fra gelding charged down the center of the track and scored in 1:53. Lincolnjames saved place, 2 lengths back, with A Real Miracle third.

Norm Parker trains Lord Of Winterfell, who raised his career bankroll to $122,846, for Jacobs Creek Racing. It was one of three wins for Brown on the 10-race card.

In college softball

Washington & Jefferson fell to 0-4 after losing two games Saturday competing in the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

The Presidents lost to UMass-Dartmouth, 9-3, and Ohio Wesleyan, 10-2.

Against UMass-Dartmouth (9-5), Taylor Andres gave up eight runs, five earned, and 10 hits in four innings. Dana Parker went 3-for-4 with two runs. For UMass-Dartmouth, Cierra Sheerin went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.

Against Ohio Wesleyan, Addy Helffrich went 2-for-3 with two RBI for W&J. Maddy Drabick went 4-for-4 with 5 RBI for Ohio Wesleyan (6-3).

In college lacrosse

The Washington & Jefferson men’s lacrosse team remained undefeated in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference play and set a new single-game scoring record with a 26-0 win at Earlham.

W&J improves to 3-6 on the season with a 2-0 mark in league action. The 26 goals best the previous record of 25 goals set in each of the last two seasons against La Roche.

The Presidents had six players record multiple goals, with five netting hat tricks in the win. Pat Heidecker led W&J and matched his career high with five goals, while Patrick Bruner, Sam Lex and Rocco Ruscitto each contributed four scores. Ray Urbash posted three goals and Ben Ward added another two.

Rohanna salvages round

Two bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine had Rachel Rohanna trying to make up shots in the latter part of the day.

Rohanna birdied three holes and bogeyed another the rest of the way to be tied for 20th place at 1 over in Florida’s Natural Charity Classic in Winter Haven, Fla., part of the Symetra Tour.

The Waynesburg native shot a 2-over 74 Saturday to drop eight places entering the final day of the tournament. Rohanna is tied with eight other golfers.

Daniela Iacobelli and Hyemin Kim are tied atop the leaderboard at 5 under.

Woodhead retires

Versatile running back Danny Woodhead has announced his retirement from the NFL after 10 seasons.

Woodhead, who played with Baltimore last season, wrote in an Instagram post early Saturday that it is time for him to leave the game he loves.

The 5-8 Woodhead was a two-time Harlon Hill Trophy winner at Chadron State in Nebraska as the top player in NCAA Division II. Despite his college success, he went undrafted in 2008 and signed with the New York Jets as a free agent.

He joined New England early in the 2010 season and played three years with the Patriots while establishing himself as a solid playmaker. Woodhead signed with the Chargers in 2013 and played parts of four seasons with them.

Woodhead had 2,238 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns, along with 300 catches for 2,698 yards and 17 scores.
