A major pitching duel came to an end with two key errors in the bottom of the ninth inning as Monessen came away with a 2-1 victory over Carmichaels in a Section 2-A game.

A popup in the infield was dropped, allowing Carly Rock to score from third base with the winning run. Maddie Guzzie scored on the previous play, also an error to tie the game, 1-1.

Carmichaels had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning when Megan Walker singled, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a passed ball.

Dana Vatakis struck out 15 and walked one to get the win for Monessen (9-1, 10-1). Kylie Sinn was the tough-luck loser for the Mikes (7-3, 10-5).

• Winning pitcher Jessica Metheny knocked in 3 runs to help Southmoreland beat McGuffey 9-3 in a Section 3-AAA game.

Faith Miller, Emily Eutsey, Charity Henderson and Courtney Meyers each had a double for Southmoreland (6-2, 6-3).

Shelby Dobrzynski doubled for McGuffey (4-5, 4-5).

• An Olivia Ulam solo home run in the sixth and a sacrifice fly from Hailey Freeman in the seventh wasn’t enough to complete the comeback as Canon-McMillan stranded the tying run on third base and fell to Baldwin, 4-3, in a battle of teams atop the Section 1-6A standings.

Baldwin (9-1, 9-2) clinches at least a share of the section title with the victory. The Fighting Highlanders can win the section outright with a victory over Peters Township Thursday or a Canon-McMillan loss to the Indians next Tuesday.

Taylor Dadig hit a three-run homer for Baldwin in the sixth inning to give it a 4-1 lead. Dadig had a pair of hits for the Fighting Highlanders, along with teammates Cassandra Carlson and Isabella Rossa.

Lindsay Schmidt went 2-for-2 for Canon-McMillan (8-3, 9-3) with a solo home run in the second. Elika Mowery also had a pair of hits for the Big Macs, who had their five-game winning streak snapped.

• Trailing 6-3 entering the fifth inning, the Waynesburg lineup exploded for 15 runs to defeat Charleroi in five innings, 18-6, in a Section 3-AAA contest.

Erin Fitch led the Raiders at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a triple. Jordan Sibert recovered in the circle after surrendering six runs in the first two innings, shutting out Charleroi (0-8, 0-9) for the remainder of the game.

Waynesburg (5-3, 7-7) ended a four-game losing streak with the victory.

• Bailey Parshall struck out 16 and Belle Vernon scored six runs in the second inning to defeat Section 2-AAAA foe South Fayette, 8-0.

Parshall only allowed three hits over her seven innings. Jordan French, Sophia Godzack, Alex Sokol and Mekenzie Sokol each had two hits for Belle Vernon (7-2, 11-2). Godzak had a home run and three RBI. French had a pair of singles with two RBI for the Leopards.

Mara Iagnemma, who suffered the loss for South Fayette (2-7, 4-10) had a single. Sydney Kormick and Liv Goerdt also singled for the Lions.

• West Greene starting pitcher Madison Renner struck out nine and hit a home run to lead the Pioneers to a 13-2 victory over Mapletown in a Section 2-A game that lasted five innings.

Renner went four innings for West Greene, which has now won three consecutive games by the mercy rule to improve to 8-1 in the section and 12-3 overall. She also hit a double.

McKenna Lampe went 3-for-4 for the Pioneers. Madison Lampe had a triple and Lexie Mooney doubled.

The lone extra-base hit for Mapletown (4-5, 6-5) was a double from Sara Chory.

• Chartiers-Houston continues to overwhelm opponents with its lineup as the Bucs scored nine runs in the first inning and eventually defeated Burgettstown, 16-6, in a Section 3-AA contest.

Eight players from C-H (7-2, 11-2) recorded at least one hit, led by leadoff hitter Kasey Scears, who went 4-for-5 and scored three runs. Kaci Alderson had two hits, including a home run, with four RBI.

The Bucs have scored at least 10 runs in nine of their 11 wins. They have outscored section opponents 102-33 in their nine games.

Victoria Carnes led Burgettstown (1-8, 1-11) by going 2-for-3 with four RBI. Carnes hit a grand slam in the fifth inning for the Blue Devils.

• MacKenzie Crile struck out nine batters, scattered six hits and fended off five errors made behind her to lead Beth-Center to a 10-4 victory over Section 3-AA foe Fort Cherry.

Crile was also helped by seven extra-base hits from the Bulldogs, including her triple. Nicole White also hit a triple. Jen Zelenick had a pair of doubles. Bailey Minered, Paige Moore and Madison Hunady also hit a double as Beth-Center improves to 3-6 in the section and 3-7 overall.

Lily Bedillion had a double for Fort Cherry (2-7, 3-9).

• Jefferson-Morgan rallied with six runs in the fifth inning to defeat Avella, 11-7, in a Section 2-A contest.

Cait Dugan earned the win in the circle for J-M (3-6, 4-6). Autumn Gustovich hit a home run for the Rockets.
